I have researched this a bit online and it appears that your employer can do this, but they can only do it after consultation with you. CAB have written a good piece on their website. If you are no longer able to do the job you were employed to do, it may well be that your employer is trying to make adaptions for you to continue. If the employer was to make you redundant on the grounds of sickness without attempts to make your working hours/duties easier to manage then they would be in breach of current employment law.

Plus if your consultant doesn't feel that a reduction in working hours is going to improve your health, does he support you being in work? Because if employment becomes a problem then you are going to need his/her support. Just for arguments sake, say things got a bit dicey and you decided to go for unfair dismissal at a tribunal your medical back ground will be used.

Do u have a union rep. They should be able to advice u on this. If not employment adviser at job centre should be able to give u the info u require. May be better asking to speak to a disability advisor....... Many people believe that as asthma may be covered by the diasability discrimination act. That u can not loose ur job. Unfortunately this is not true. As if despite reasonable adjustment to your post and/our redeployment to a different job .you continue to háve sick time. Your job can then be terminated ....... On the grounds that you are nit fit for purpose of employment. . Similar has happened to me.

I hope this is not too late for you, but the following link to pages in the Equality and Human Rights Commission's web site may be of use for you:-

equalityhumanrights.com/adv...

There is a whole raft of useful stuff in there. It is the one that I have found the most examples in.

The other pages that you may find useful, if you have the time to read them all, are the Government Equalities Office's pages on The Equality Act 2010:-

I would certainly support the suggestion of consulting your union, if that is available to you. It worked for me. In the meantime, I would like to suggest that the proposal to reduce your hours, although an adjustment, is not a reasonable one when it is not supported by the medical profession looking after you. There may be more appropriate adjustments.

Hope that is of use.
