Osteopenia is the stage before osteoporosis. It means you have lost some bone density but not enough to be truly osteoporotic.

My bone density is now described as Osteopenic which is an improvement on Osteoporosis a few years ago.

Your GP may decide to give you some bone protectors but they may weigh up the side effects with the effects of the treatment. In women, most are mutagenic, cause foetal abnormalities but not sure what they do to men! They may wait and see. I now take Protelose (Strontium Ranelate) but have taken Didronel and Fosamax in the past. Most of these are licenced for post menopausal women! (I am pre menopause) I also take Adcal D3. Calcium & Vit D

A high calcium & vit D diet is recomended ( suplements too) and impact excersise as much as you can tollerate. e.g. walking, jogging (!!!) other sports etc. Have a look at the Osteoprosis web site for more info.

I have osteopenea too, although i am a tad stuck because i cannot do the exercise recommended and i cannot find a single calcium tablet that doesnt have milk or lactose in! One thing it does mean is if you cough lots and lots with an infection you can break a rib, i did it twice with my last admission and it is painful!

Hope you can do the exercise stuff and find a calcium tablet to take!

PLumie

Plumie, were you looking for just calcium or don't mind magnesium as well, this one may fit the bill simplysupplements.net/produ...

should also add Almonds are high in calcium, as well as other minerals.

Just calcium i am looking for!

natural calcium product. hollandandbarrett.com/pages... fills all the requirements I think, lactose and milk free

It is recomended that you take calcium with vitamin D as that helps the body absorb it.

Adcal D3 is milk free. Though may be POM only??

Hi,

I was told the same 5 years ago, they decided not to give me anything and to monitor it closely, the bone density has improved a bit as the years have gone by and hope they continue to do so.

Snowy

I take Calceos D3 every day which is milk / lactose free and I think sachets of Calfovit D3 are also milk free? I'm also on alendronic acid 70mg weekly but the brand I have seems to have lactose in :-/

I've been on bone protection for 18mths due to frequent courses of pred and then more recently the introduction of permanent hydrocortisone treatment for my adrenal function. It gives me peace of mind to know that I'm on the protection early. My consultant has said we'll get a bone scan done later in the year to see what's happening with my bones.

Not what you're looking for?
