Schools and disabilities

Hi,

I've had a lot of problems with my school regarding trips/clubs and matches and up until a couple of weeks ago was banned completely. Anyway a big meeting with the school nurse, asthma nurse, my consultants (asthma and general), GP, head of year and the medical staff was held and it was agreed that not letting me on trips was not on. I later had a meeting with my general consultant who was absoloutley livid i wasn't allowed to go on trips and wrote me a care plan and spoke to school herself saying they HAD to let me.

Anyway i applied for the Wimbledon trip and was told the day the places came out (there were too many so names were picked out a hat) that the school didn't want to take me. They didn't really give a proper reason other than i was 'too much of a risk' and my doctors knew nothing of this. My mum tried to speak to them but they were having none of it so we got hold of the consultant who has promised to ring in on Monday. However it's now very very unlikely I'll get on the trip as obviously all the places have been filled but i wasn't even entered into the draw.

So to the point: what is the schools position/allowance of this - do they actually have the power to say i can't go and what happens now??

Aww,sorry Anzharry your having a rough time and been told you carnt ,think theschool will have to back down but think they have the last say.My sons are epileptic and went on trips and one did have a fit and endedup in hops.The collage was good and the staff with him text us every hour till outof hosp.Hope you get to go and with letter from docs etc carnt see how they would say no.I work in a school and all staff are first aid trained.good luck you seemed upset on fb on your post.chin up and take care love Glynis xxxxedit-deleated double post

I work in a college with learners with multiple and often far more complex needs and we could not possibly get away with that. If a student wanted to go, we would have to try every available option to make it possible to do so. Asthma should be a simple one to arrange, a care plan writtin by the appropiate people, most obvious option would be a 1:1 support worker fully trained in what to do and willing to be accompany you yo hospital if the worst should happen but your case would have to be severe for them not to be able to put summat in place.
