Humidifiers....
Not many of you then. I've ordered one from Argos, should be delivered on Monday, so i will let you all know how beneficial they are to asthmatics :0)
Could of done with it tonight really
Hi Julie,
I do not have one, ...just curious to why you have bought one.
Most (not all) asthmatics are affected by damp/humid air and therefore would opt for a dehumidifier to reduces the moisture content in the air. This also helps control dust mites as they cannot survive at low levels of relative humidity.
A humidifier on the other hand introduces moisture into the air (increases relative humidity). A humidifier might be used in an office which has electric storage heating that is known to dry the indoor air and therefore iritate the mucous membranes.
Food for thought,
Derek
Warm moist air really helps me breath. So when i have a cold or its a humid day, it will definately help me.
Julie, how did you get on. I've just ordered one, hoping that it will help me. this cold dry air seems to give me a sore throat, and prone to colds/coughs. Also swimming is recommended because of the humidity, so anyone know why a lot of posts here say the humidity is a problem?
Humidifiers
I think this depends on the type of asthma. I find humidity makes things worse but one of the treatments used to be to steam up the bathroom and take the patient in there. I use a dehumidifier. I think the problem is mould in my case which would make sense.
Good Luck
The reason I'm gonna try one is the humidistat here, as I type goes from 69% without the computer on, and I'm fine, but after a few hours it's down to around 60% and I get a sore, dry throat. Whilst i don;t think sitting in a sauna would be advisable, the cold weather doesn't help, so a little more moisture may. Warm and dry is fine, but I like the house cold, so can't stick the lack of moisture. I can't swim in a warm pool, but a local one is cold, and this is great.
Thought I'd give an update. Had my warm mist humidifier for a week now, and use it in the bedroom for about 1/2hour before going to bed. Seems to be really good, I've had more consistent peak flow readings, and gone on to set two new PBs over that week.
My office is really bad for humidity, can range from 21% to 30% so they brought in humidifiers however ther were ok when the heating was off but since its gone on I have had real problems. The air seems to be so dry and loads of people many not asthmatics are struggling.
I have done this on several occassions as im not flushed with cash at the minute i have soaked a towel in water and wrapped it up so it is in a long tube shape and set it on my heater in my room and it has helped me but it does not help me all the time so i dont think i will invest in a humidifier just yet and less i can find one that does both
