I ruptured my achilles tendon at the end of Feb. Leg put in plaster. After about 2 weeks a bout of severe shortness of breath led to hospital admission. CT scan revealed PE. PE treated initially with injections before warfarin. Released from hospital after 16 days with care package. The asthma was very unstable for 6-8 weeks before slowly settling back to ""normal"". Fortunately had very good support/advice from the hospital respiratory nurses and consultant.

P.S. Not easy hopping on crutches with severe asthma.

Hi

Sorry to hear about the blood clot - im afraid they have no age boundaries -I had multiple P.E's 12 years ago after the birth of baby no 2 i was 22. In some wqays u are lucky that you had not sypmtom s(bet u were SOB and blamed asthma?) as the pain I had with mine was 1 i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy and certainly 1 i will never forget!!

You will really need to take things easy for a while as it knocks u out esp on top of asthma, make sure u ask for tests to find cause, have they put u on wafarin for 6 months? i was in hosp for 3 months as i also got double pneumonia and lung collapse but i dont kno of anyone else who been in more than 2 weeks.

please feel free to pm me i will reply as quick as poss but am also costafied. get well soon

Hi Katharine

Sorry to hear you have a PE. The main thing I guess is it’s been caught and you’re being treated. I had multiple PE when I was 21 – like you it was relatively asymptomatic without any pain, although there was increased sob and heart rate, cold bluish extremities, tiredness and headaches (which put down to other chest probs at first). After the scan I was in hospital for a few days, given heparin injections, oxygen and a nice pair of those stockings to wear. After that it was Warfarin for six months with the accompanying INR checks. While in hospital a host of tests were done to try and find out the cause to no avail. Two weeks later I got married and after the six months I was back to ‘normal’, just a bit wary of sitting still for long periods of time and flying! As there had been no leg or chest pain being told there were PE on the scan was indeed a shock; however this was tempered when my sats increased and the sob, headaches etc settled down quite rapidly with treatment – hopefully you’ll also find things improve quickly now it’s been diagnosed.

All the best in your recovery and please let us know how you’re getting on

thanks for replies escaped today although INR levels out of range had 2 days in range then today shot 2 4 but got appt at local costa anticoag clinic thurs and hoping that can then transfer to gp clinic for monitoring. How long did it take for you to get back to normal the main prob is we still don't know whether how chest feeling now is down to poorly controlled asthma (for which they have cancelled my outpatients appt next week and have been told con will see me in clinic in 2-3 months which since 1st appt should have been feb and this was 3rd and keep missing them cause have been admitted am not impressed with) or due to the P.E. they have increasesd my meds by adding in flixotide on top of sereitide but still finding that pfs low unless use a neb which makes me think could be poor control of asthma. Anyone any thoughts i realise that flixidide will take while to kick in and have been told to reduce pred by 5 a month after coming out on 20 untill down to 10 then should be reviwed in clinic . Not convinced as dropped from 40 to 30 last fri so as chest tempremental before last admission may hang on till friday before reducing to 20. Haven't got lower than 20 since christmas as always splat when get to 15 so fingers crossed.
