Oral thrush

Hi Kerry-Anne,

sometimes people don't get any symptoms at all, but if they do they can include any of the following (depending on area affected):

- white patches in the mouth that if scraped away when for example brushing teeth leave a red 'raw' patch that may bleed.

- soreness in the mouth / throat

- altered voice

- horrible taste in mouth / altered sense of taste

- red sore cracks at the corners of the lips

- dry mouth

- bad breath (or maybe just paranoia that you will have when the doctor looks in your mouth to diagnose!)

Is pretty common in asthma patients on inhaled steroids - is one of the reasons why spacers are recommended, along with brushing your teeth / rinsing your mouth out after using your steroid inhaler.

It's not very pleasant if you get it with symptoms. I've been lucky in that i never got it whilst on inhaled steroids, and even long term oral steroids... it was only on the combination of being in hospital, generally unwell and on the combination of inhaled steroids, iv steroids and three different iv antibiotics that i got my first, second and third case all within a 3 month period!

Treatment is usually pretty straightforward - they give antifungal lozenges / drops (nystatin) or an oral gel (miconazole - weird textured orange flavour paste) or if problematic they can give a one off dose of fluconazole, or a short course of fluconazole if that doesn't do the trick.

I get a weird raw feeling on the roof of mouth nd tongue like that after you have had a cup of tea that too hot?

Natural traetments that work well are live natural yoghurt and garglimg tea tree oil? not too pleasant but effective.

Hi

If you suffer from thrush alot, a good health shop has asidophilis(sp?) buy if it is in the fridge not off the shelf as most of the healthy bacteria will have died off.

This helps balance up the friendly bacteria with the yeast.

Also after a big dose of antibiotic take a good vitimin B. If you can.
