My son attended last year and had a great time. He was 12 and had had a lot of time off school with 'difficult' asthma. He used to be very sporty before his health worsened, and couldnt do much PE at school (just occasionally). The staff on the AUK hol were absolutely brilliant, so kind and encouraging - also firm. They took wonderful care of the children and made sure they had all their meds and did peak flows.

They could choose their activities, my son did raft building, swimming, one night of camping, abseiling, he enjoyed them all and the fact that he could do them gave his confidence a boost. But there were less strenuous activities the children could pick - they also played games and had a talent contest at the end. They also had a couple of sessions on asthma itself.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Hope your son enjoys himself!

I know I am not a parent but I volunteered on my first KAH last year and can not blieve how amazing they are and sent my application back for this year within 3 days!

I have never known so many people who so desperatly want to give uup their time to care for, support and educate children wth asthma and allergies.

I think the bonus of having a mixture of dstaff with or without asthma and allergies helps too.

The holiday gave me lots to take back into my classroom with me as well and the difference in the independence the children gained over their helath and confidence in trying new things was amazing.

Can't wait for this year, wish I had known about them as a child, would have had a more active role in my own treatment much sooner

...and I'm also not a parent, but along with moderating this lovely message board I also happen to be the manager of this year's Kick Asthma holiday, so if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Angievere's description of the holiday is spot on really, and the main benefit of the Laches Wood Centre is that all of the activities are on-site, so we don't waste time traveling to them. The venue and its staff are excellent, and we've got a fantastic volunteer team this year too; I'm really looking forwards to it!
