Its a problem I think more cos at 11 your head if full of other stuff. I assume it is the preventer one she is missing out. I am afraid I had to get tough and say take your inhaler and I want to see it happen. In the end he got the message. Its harder now he is 18, despite seeing me in some pretty heartstopping moments he is not good at taking his seretide. I know he has not taken it cos he will wheeze when hurrying to get ready to get out.

yes its the brown preventor that she wont take, I have tried telling her horror stories as I thought it may frighten her into taking it mean I know but I thought it would work but it didnt. She has not had a full on asthma attack as yet so I dont think she really understands how dangerous asthma can be and obviously i dont wont her to have a full on attack but Im scared this will happen if she dont take her pump.

Hey

Maybe her talking to other people her age about her asthma might help

Www.kickasthma.org.uk is a website kinda like this one for under 18's it has a message board too and the people that talk on it are very nice (me included of course!)....

Hope that helps

Hello, my daughter is 9 and ( thanks to the ""nice"" friends she has) is much less keen on taking her inhalers - she has started to lie about taking them - and making up peak flow results (as she knows what her best is - clever!) but as I think someone else said the coughing gave her away!! I'm afraid that although it sounds awful I literally stand over her now and make sure she has taken it - I also laid on the... you have to earn trust....etc LOL!! She has been hospitalised numerous times and knows the consquences of not taking them but I guess its all part of growing up and trying to take control. (at 9!!???) She doesn't like being different from her friends and they unfortunately are not helpful. Sorry this has not been more helpful! but it helps me not to feel bad about doing it because I know she will be far worse if I don't.

Well its finally happened my daughter has had her first proper asthma attack and was rushed to hospital. Now this has happened and frightened her as much as it has she has said she will never forget to take her pumps again. Althought it was awful to see it has finally made us all face up to her asthma.

For little darlings (and sometimes not to little) who fake PF's up a bit then ask your GP to prescribe a Piko1`it digitally record PF's and you can go back and check the last 96. It takes the best of 3 done over 5 minutes I think. So gone are the days when if it was just above the number you could randomly round it up, not that people here would ever do that :)

ps Piko1's now appear in the BNF and think on the computer prescribing programme (cathbear?), they are more than the old PF meters but it is a one off thing and I am sure most GP's will have the sense to see that as it records FEV1's too they are a useful tool in asthma management.

It's not coming up on our formulary, but that doesn't mean it can't be prescribed - it is in the drug tarrif, meaning that doctors can prescribe it on a standard FP10 (green prescription), although they may have to write it by hand!

Best way to get your kids dealing with their own meds? Send them on a Kick Asthma holiday! It may be a little late to try and get on one this summer, but if you don't ask, you don't get!

E-mail holiday@asthma.org.uk or call 020 7786 5000 for more details.
