Just hi

I joined today. I don't know what to expect but would be nice to hear from others with Aspergers. I was diagnosed at 27 ( I'm 33).

Have very little friends and find it difficult to connect with people.

So just a hello

Good day Laura

How are you feeling today? What with you biting the bullet and saying hi, I thought I would welcome you to the community and see how life is treating you.

I myself got diagnosed a while back, so I am happily the other side of that long tunnel to normality (Or at least an Aspie's version of it) and peace of mind.

I hope that you find some online friends that you feel comfortable with chatting with, but for now welcome again and take care....

Hi Lizzylaura

Just to say hi also to you I don't myself have Aspergers but my beautiful granddaughter Lesharne does she is 18 years old and like yourself finds it difficult to communicate so if I can help in any way or you just need to talk don't hesitate to contact anyone here. Annette

Glad you have found this place and welcome! Do you know about the website WrongPlanet? Another great place for spectrum folk and their families to connect. Has getting a diagnosis made things any easier for you? I got a diagnosis a year ago at age 57 and it was a bit hard but also a big relief.

Tbh it's not made any difference in my life. I still find life very confusing at times. But thank you for the welcome

How are you finding life since your diagnosis? I'm forever at the psychiatrists. Thanks for the nice compliment

Hi, I was wondering how you go about getting a diagnosis as an adult. My son has aspergers and was diagnosed at 10 years old. We were referred by gp to paediatrician, after school suggested it would be beneficial to him to get diagnosis as he moved on to secondary school. I had always suspected he was on the spectrum, but didn't really think much of it, but it has helped to ensure he is supported at school etc.

Anyway, getting to the point. My brother has more extreme characteristics than my son, he is 33. He has a miserable life, has no friends to speak of, never had a girlfriend. Hasn't been able to hold a job, so has not really worked for 15 years. He used to drink heavily to medicate himself, but gladly has given up, and hasn't drunk now for more than 5 years. He does smoke cannabis, which he claims to need to keep himself from killing himself. He has seen a psychiatrist has been given anti depressant s, for depression and ocd. Although he says the Dr just dismisses him saying he has a personality disorder, and social depression.

I am convinced he had some form of ASD, he had problems since he was tiny. My mum agrees but says I shouldn't say anything to him as it might upset him. He already has no self confidence, he had teenage acne, which has cleared up but he claims he is disfigured and ugly.

I think if we knew how to get him a diagnoses he might understand why things have been difficult. When the Dr explained my sons diagnosis to him, my son immediately said, well that explains a few things. He was relieved because he had a reason for thinking differently to others.

Would be interested in hearing others experiences.

Thanks

E x

I got referred to the psychiatrist for a diagnosis. When my son was diagnosed with autism the paediatrician asked to speak to my mum and told her I definitely had aspergers but he couldn't give me a diagnosis. So he told her to get me referred to a psychiatrist for an official diagnosis.

I see a psychiatrist every two months for my depression and anxiety. But it doesn't really do much.

Hope your brother gets through to the psychiatrist to look at him properly to give an accurate diagnosis

I too drink quite a bit to self medicate. But the next day my anxiety is worse
