Please give me advice! Irregular bleeding and more...

Hi (new here),

I've had heavy irregular bleeding for a long time now, over 3 years, I also suffer with nausea and IBS symptoms. Bloated almost always! I've already gone to GP for a pain in my right side and he suspected it was my appendix or kidneys (but it wasn't when tested) although when they did an ultra-sound around that area they noted that they couldn't see my ovaries. I'm concerned that this means they ultimately haven't been checked. There was apparently no reason for the pain that was cause for concern and they left me without any diagnosis.

I've been to the doctors a couple of times regarding the bleeding prior to this pain in my side and they've brushed it off as my contraceptive implant. I can bleed irregularly between 2-4 weeks a month and I bled for 3 months at one point. I've noted an increase in cases where young women have been similarly told their issues are merely caused by their choice of contraceptive and have found out (after going private for smears) that they've got cancer!

I'm worried that all this time I've been taking the doctors word for it and struggling through all of this when there could be something more at work! I'm 23 years old.

What do you think I should do? Take the implant out and see if all this nonsense stops? Or take things into my own hands and get a private smear?

Hi there.

Seen a lot of posts where people have done a private scan but are you able to talk with your GP and ask him to refer you in for an ultrasound scan. When I had mine recently they were only able to see one ovary due to bowel gas.

I could go back to my GP and talk to him again, I have already had an Ultrasound and they couldn't see either ovary due to bowel gas and they just left it at that. I'm going to have the implant taken out to see if my symptoms improve but if they don't I'll have to go back to the GP again and push my case.

I'm hoping that the symptoms will stop as soon as I take out the implant.

Hello there,

It’s worrying isn’t it when you can’t get an answer to a health issue ?

You describe a number of symptoms ; nausea, IBS, bloated , irregular bleeding, the intermittent (?) pain in your side…. So much going on for you!

The ultrasound scan you tell us about , if it was an abdominal one (for checking kidneys) it’s not uncommon that it’s difficult to visualise the ovaries.

If you would like to talk through your concerns in confidence with Ask Eve, where we can explore your next steps further, please do contact our Eve Appeal nurse specialist on freephone 0808 802 0019 or email nurse@eveappeal.org.uk.

Wishing you well.
