Dabigatran does more or less the same as warfarin, i.e. it slows down the speed of blood clotting and helps to prevent blood clots. It is safer than warfarin and does not require frequent blood tests and you are on a fixed dose but you have to take it twice a day not once like warfarin. It is approved in the UK for patients with AF (Atrial Fibrilation) as these are the patients it has been tested on but will in time probably become available to patients with other conditions.

Hi

Safety wise I think that Dabigitran is safer in one respect but not in others. The problem is that its effects at present cannot be reversed if you do have a bleed although they are working on it.

I don't fully understand your question but I think Dabagitran has been approved of for use with AF but not sure about other complaints. If you are asking what is AF it irregular heart beat, can explain more if yo need it but you can google it, or get onto the AFA site which will explain it in more detail

Regards

Eileen

Dabigatran is licensed for use in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (for people who have AF but do not have valve problems or a replacement valve). It is also licensed for the prevention of blood clots during hip and knee surgery
