Allergic to Glycols

Glycol free nail products and other cosmetics

I had given up on being able to do anything with my fingernails other than just buffing them, because every polish on the market, including the "7-free," had glycols. Generally glycol distearate, but sometimes others. Recently I located one company that doesn't use glycols or any other poison. I am not affiliated/sponsored etc and don't want to be spamming, so instead of putting in a link I'll just put the company name and anyone interested can check them out. the company is called Kapa Nui Nails.

I'm always on the hunt for cosmetics that are glycol free, not just nail stuff. I have located ONE mascara on the entire planet so far. That one is called 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara. I think I found it on Amazon if I recall correctly.

Powdered cosmetic products are easier to get glycol free. I usually go to indie mineral makeup sites. Especially the ones that sell loose minerals because they don't have to add anything sticky for pressing it. Lipsticks are just a toss up; I have to read the ingredients for each and every one. Liquid lip gloss is a wash, though. Chapstick type stuff like Burt's Bees is usually okay.

It's not like cosmetics are essential, but when I get exposed to glycols, the result is red bumps and acne on my face, which I then prefer to cover so I don't look like a leper when I leave the house. COVID masks help hide that, but there is still the forehead region. These bumps also leave scars on my face which I also would rather hide.

Everyone is using those blasted propylene glycol gel sanitizers because of COVID. I have to wear gloves outside the home these days, no matter the weather or location. Fabulous, yeah? :/

Thank you so much for posting the name of the company for the fingernail polish! I don't use polish that much, but every now and then I would love to use it!

I know I'm new here, but I keep reading that the hand sanitizers have glycol. Is it just the gel ones that have the glycol? The couple of bottles I have here at my house don't list any glycol. I guess I should also ask - are you here in the states? I now one of the FaceBook sites I'm on have many people that like in the UK. I'm sure all products are different in other countries.

I'm in the USA. I have not yet found a gel sanitizer without PG, though who knows, it may exist somewhere. Liquid ones, however, are sometimes safe. Clorox makes one and so does White House. Both are alcohol-based liquids.

I haven't worn makeup in awhile but in the past I've used 100% pure (100percentpure.com/) and really liked it. I do use Mineral Fusion eyebrow pencil now and haven't had a problem. (mineralfusion.com/)

I've been trying to find a salon that has shampoo I can use. Aveda changed the formula on the only shampoo they made I could use and now it has propanediol, so I can't use it. I can always bring my own shampoo, but it sure would be nice if I didn't have to. I haven't had a salon haircut in five years and I'm really ready!

I use GermX sanitizer and don't react to it. It does have a fragrance but dries so quickly that it isn't a problem for me.

As always, though, read the labels on anything you try and don't assume that because one of us can use something, all of us can.

Here's some info to keep in mind about product recommendations:

Thanks for the topic, gothchiq!

Wow…I was just responding about a company with many products that work for me. I do NOT sell their products. I am also VERY allergic to polyethylene and propylene glycol. Everyone else on this site has always been so friendly. I don’t understand your lashing out.

It has glycols. You are recommending glycol products to people who are severely allergic.

They have hundreds of products. I didn’t state that every single one was safe. I haven’t checked every one. I’ve found some that work for ME.

Look, I'm sorry you feel slighted, but it isn't responsible to recommend an entire line without stating that not all of it is safe, and especially a multilevel marketing scheme product.
