Good afternoon Luna1824

Thank you for your post on the Atrial Fibrillation support forum.

Hopefully someone on the forum will be able to help with the yawning symptoms you are experiencing.

We do have an info sheet about Apixaban, I have added the link below for you.

Kind regards

This is from A I.

Both apixaban and sotalol are medications that can potentially cause yawning as a side effect. Yawning is listed as a common side effect of sotalol, while it is listed as an uncommon side effect of apixaban. If you are experiencing excessive yawning or any other concerning side effects while taking these medications, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider.

Aren't GPs good at saying that? ;-) I had yawning when I had atrial flutter, as well as burping. I wonder whether it isn't a mild disturbance of the phrenic nerve, (but I am no expert, of course)? This supplies the diaphragm and can cause yawning, hiccupping and other symptoms.

Thank you, I've been on medications since October, yawning started in February, along with fatigue, breathlessness and brain fog, had a hole in the heart repaired and the worse thing ever! Was on Bisprolol and was switched to Sol, but have stopped taking all betablockers to see if any improvement. Obvs AF episodes occur more often but can live with that atm.

Oh my - I have read that repairs can lead to arrhythmias worsening or starting. One group of drugs that can cause a lot of yawning is the SSRIs.

yawning can also be a sign of air hunger. Check your oxygen levels and practice some breathing exercises

My mother probably had AF in the 60's and she always maintained that yawning helped her to feel better. When my AF started some years ago, I remembered her comment and tried deep yawning - it seemed to help.

I would agreee that air hunger can be the problem and controlled breathing may help.

hi Luna. I have taken Apixaban for as long as I have had AF, about 7 years and have had no side affects that I am aware of. Hope that helps.

hi luna1824. I too have been yawning excessively and as yet no advice. But, my NT-proBNP blood test is up to 343. I have also an increase of af and am very tired plus my angina episodes have increased.I am chasing the Gp and cardiology on this I won’t give up. By the way I’m on apixaban plus lots of other heart tablets. I hope you sort out your problem soon. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

Thank you, funny enough my proBNP blood test was also elevated but said there was no problem with my heart. I'll see how it goes sice I've stopped the Betablockers.

As well as blood test, they have ordered an echocardiogram for me in aug. No urgency. ?

Hi luna

The prof. Of cardiology wrote to me very quickly and said my elevated bnp was still within the acceptable range so not to worry. That was nice and quick wasn’t it. I hope you get your problems sorted soon as well. He didn’t mention the hiccuping. Take care🤗
