Is there a once a day anti coagulant?

Morges profile image

Being a bit lazy here but hoping someone can tell me - I'm finding it tricky to take Apaxiban 12 hours apart with food. Would prefer once a day so I can take it with my meal. I get indigestion if no food going in with the Apixaban and struggle to eat something to fit in with it! Thanks in advance.

XARELTO (rivaroxaban) is once a day dosing.

Yes, Xarelto was my first anti-coagulant but I changed to Eliquis for a while when I read it was the best for AF on this site. But when I read the actual studies the difference was really not major, so I'm back with Xarelto or iXarolo as it is called in Africa. It is more expensive, but it is more convenient and does not give me heartburn as Eliquis did. I was taking my first Eliquis at 5pm with my last meal, which was fine, but waking at 5am for the second. You can take Ekiquis without food., but it's Xarelto for me!

Before you switch, another thing you can try is to take your 5am Eliquis with a slice or two of cheese. That may be all you need to calm the stomach.

I am currently officially prescribed Edoxaban. I take 1, 60mg tablet with my first cup of tea in the morning, before my light breakfast, along with all my other morning medications. However, I'm not a fan of this Edoxaban and have just started to return to Warfarin which I take at night and which, prior to going onto Edoxaban, I had been on Warfarin for 12 years.

May I suggest as there are 4 of these DOAC's you get a medication review from your Surgery and see if there is something similar you could take that don't give such side effects.

Thank you - I will ask for a review before I need the next repay prescription. I want to read up on the alternatives first.I had some second hand experience of Warfarin because my mother was on it for some 20 years - but I think the newer meds are easier to manage.

Can you tell me why you are not keen on Edoxaban please? Does it affect your stomach?

BenHall1 profile image
BenHall1 in reply toGmc54

Basically several undesirable side effects BUT not life threatening or in any way associated with bleeding. No, it does not affect my stomach, gut or the digestive system. Horror dreams and nightmares, are the worst. Sleeplessness. Amazing tiredness and lacking energy and numbness down the right arm ending up with pins and needles at the extremities including pain in the first two fingers.

I also hold the view that, compared to Warfarin the drug is too new and at this stage fully documented side effects of patient users is still unfolding. All that has happened so far is that it has met the drug approval requirements of various nations that have approved it. Quite different to patient user experiences. BUT that a personal take only.

With Warfarin I test myself and if I wanted to do it every 3 hours for a week ( for instance ) I could see just what is happening to my body via the INR test results. With Edoxaban, I will know nothing.

I take Edoxaban once a day after breakfast, and so far don’t seem to have any problems with it.

I take Warfarin. I know some prefer the new meds but for me it works, it is a small tablet that I take once a day.

I was on Apixaban and it was changed to Edoxaban for cost reasons. I have been happy on the Edoxaban for a couple of years now and prefer taking it once a day

I don’t have problems with apixaban. But I’d hate to have to eat late at night so get why you want change.

Apixaban can be taken with or without food. You can crush apixaban tablets and mix them with water, apple juice or apple purée.

Policy prevents posting links, but you may google to check. Above is from the NHS site.

That does not mean that those who are susceptible to digestive problems with it don't find them worse if they take it on an empty stomach.

True. Just posting NHS guidance.

I believe NHS links are allowed as it’s a government website, it’s videos, advertisements and reports that we need to avoid or get permission for.

Sites to trials in medical journals are not government websites; they are peer reviewed medical sites , and as such are superior to government sites for medical information, yet we are still not allowed these sites or go through the rig-a-maro of permission.

The objective should be to educate from valid sources --medical journals are more than valid --, not to make educating difficult. We are not further ahead by placing obstructions in the path to learning.

Rivaroxaban is once a day but if Apixaban upsets you if taken without food I wouldn’t touch it - it has to be taken with a full meal but still gave me very bad GI problems.

What were your symptoms please?

Buffafly profile image

Reflux, bowel pain and diarrhoea, also had bleeding from bowel and tendency to bruise very badly. Horrible stuff!

Oh dear, not good. Hope you're feeling better now. I take apixaban after breakfast and in evening with yoghurt. Have had stomach problems , maybe h pylori caused, but not had a definite diagnosis yet, taking forever with NHS . Tried 3 thinners, Edoxaban = headaches/felt unwell. Rivaroxaban = unwell.

I take Edoxaban before breakfast with a glass of water . It’s a with or without food , but I always take it just before breakfast then forget about it. No problems with it so far

I had no problems with 1x day Xarelto (Rivaroxaban). I was switched to Eliquis (Apixaban) and had inflammation in my joints. All that said, we all respond as differently to our meds as we are different in our AFib situations! Ask your doctor. Hope you find one you are comfortable with!

I take Apixaban but was never told to take it with food Even on the box it doesn’t say take with food. I’ve been on a few years now just take it about 12 hours apart.

Same here. I have an alarm set on my phone and take it at 8.30 am and 8.30 pm. The only slightly annoying thing is remember to switch alarm off if I’m at the theatre in the evening!

Can you set notifications that appear on your phone screen instead of alarm. Maybe not available on all phones.

Surprised you have issues taking it away from food but we're all different. How about with a snack - piece of fruit or a cracker of some type? Would this compromise your digestion routine?

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply toSingwell

I have digestive issues taking it with food. It gives me bloating , reflux and nausea - all mild but still noticeable. It also makes the pain in joints where I have arthritis worse. I hate taking it.

I take edoxoban (lixiana ) once a day after breakfast. I have been on it for 8 years and been fine. Of course, what is OK for me might not be for someone else , so like others have suggested, I would talk to your doctor.

I was put on Apixaban, to start with and then I was changed to Edoxaban, which a lot of Drs now prescribe, as I think it’s cheaper. You only take that once a day.I take it about 7pm, , after my dinner, with my Sotalol and atorvastatin.

My wife has paroxysmal AF and is relatively new to taking anticoagulants (or antiplatelets to be more specific in the case of the Edoxaban that she takes - the doc explained the difference but I suppose for us ley people they're essentially doing the same thing). She does a lot of research before taking any new meds and was relatively happy Edoxaban, and also preferred that over apixaban as it was once per day and not necessary to have food first. After just over 2 months she has no significant complaints - just one bad nightmare, but that could be a coincidence.

Rosie0202 profile image
Rosie0202

When I was told to take an anticoagulant, I spoke to my Gp about which one would be the best. He said his Mother has Af and she takes Eliquis (Apixaban) so I went with that option. I tolerated it very well until the next prescription when I was given the generic Apixaban and this caused stomach problems. I switched back to the brand Eliquis and all seemed well. However I have since suffered stomach problems with it but when I took Omeprazole it stopped the problems. To protect my bones I usually do one month on Omeprazole, then 2 months on Gaviscon but just at night. It seems to work well on this regime but we are all different. Just a reminder if taking Gaviscon at night, don't drink any liquids until the morning as it negates the effect ie acts as a 'raft' to avoid acid reflux.

Hi I developed af 5 and half years ago and was put on edoxoban in 2019. I take one late evening, with or without food, everyday and never had any problems. I had a sucessful ablation last year and have now been discharged by cardiology. I remain on edoxoban because of my age, 80 years, and sex - female. Best of luck.
