Raised Blood Pressure after Covid

Not sure if this is the right Forum to post this on but I wondered if anyone who has high blood pressure and has had Covid has found that their blood pressure readings have risen since having it.

I had an appointment with my Cardiologist this morning and showed him my readings over the last month orso. I mentioned and he agreed that they were generally higher in the last three weeks since I had Covid. I hadn’t taken any readings for the week I had Covid as I reckoned they would probably be higher anyway.I mentioned that I had read reports online that a few surveys had been carried out that concluded that new cases of hypertension were being discovered in people who had Covid and that Covid had exacerbated higher blood pressure readings in people previously diagnosed.My cardio disputed this and said he had treated thousands of Covid patients and he reckoned just the opposite and in fact Covid lowered blood pressure.

Has anyone else experienced either higher or lower blood pressure who has hypertension and has also had Covid? I have regular blood tests as I have Polymyalgia and know that my inflammation levels have risen since Covid so to my non medical brain why couldn’t it also raise my blood pressure?

I have read that "long" covid can lead to bouts of lower blood pressure and dizziness, etc. Your mention of your polymyalgia was interesting as I do know of three people who developed this after covid, with another friend developing vasculitis and kidney failure. This really isn't always a simple illness, for sure.

Thank you Pipman. UK surveys mention low blood pressure as a symptom of Long Covid but not many mention higher blood pressure most of these surveys are from the US. I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia prior to Covid but my last blood test showed my ESR (inflammation level) had risen since I’ve had Covid.

One of our friends - the one with vasculitis - had long covid fit eight months, then had the booster. It seems the combination might have caused her to go get much worse, although no one is sure, since her illness worsened a great deal within ten days of her taking the vaccine. It’s a rare thing, fortunately, but she has suffered a great deal poor woman, and will never fully recover her kidney function stuck remains under 50%. One of the two other friends with covid related problems has just had to her back on steroids after slowly coming off them, owing to a flare up. It’s all rather worrying.

I had covid a few weeks ago (second time snd again felt dreadful - had the booster on Saturday and went down with covid Tuesday)

It did affect my afib/tachycardia and raised my BP a little bit, but I think it was because I was worried that all the symptoms would affect my new pacemaker which was working so well

hi Jomaur, my husband has had raised blood pressure since Covid and his cardiologist says that it is quite common.

Thank you for your reply. It’s interesting and confusing when doctors completely contradict one another. I have high blood pressure and have been on medication for years but my readings are definitely higher since I had Covid about a month ago. It was my second bout of Covid, my first was last year and was the Omicron virus and I didn’ feel at all ill but this time it was the new virus. My husband and myself both had it and felt quite rough. Both times I was given intravenous anti virals because I take steroids for Polymyalgia Rheumatica. My cardiologist has now decided that I should have a 24 hour Ambulatory blood test which finished this morning and I will see him again in 3 weeks time.He is comparing Covid to the Flu virus saying that doesn’t cause higher BP levels but it would appear that Covid was engineered by man to inflict as much damage on the human body as possible.
