Amiodarone Dose

I’ve been prescribed Amiodarone . The 1st week’s dose is 200mg 3 times a day then 100mg per day thereafter. I’m just enquiring if anyone else has taken a daily dose of 600mg daily for 7 days when starting this drug?

I haven’t but sounds as though 600mg is the loading dose as amiodarone has a long half life and will stay in your system for many weeks/months.

My husband has been on Amiodarone for about 6 years now and now on 100mg/daily as maintenance which works well for him and given good QOL.

Let’s hope it works for you, cardioversion alone often does not.

Do you mean 600mg per day for a week is the loading dose ?

I’m grateful for your input especially the fact that your husband’s QoL is good. I’ve been on nebivolol and struggle through life essentially. Thankyou

That sounds correct although I had 1 week 200mg ×3 a day then week 2 was 200mg ×2 a day then 100mg per day after that

Thanks and I’m assuming it worked for you ?

First time about 4 years ago before CV had amiodarone and was in sinus rhythm for over 2 years. Had CV without amiodarone recently which was unsuccessful.

I was on amiodorone for a few months pre CV, and I remember hearing how it’s normal to start on a high “loading dose”. I never found out why that was not applied in my case. I was taken off it as soon as it failed to work in maintaining NSR after the CV.

Thankyou for input and I too am awaiting a CV and hoping Amiodarone is going to keep me in sinus rhythm 🤞

Yes the loading dose is normal. I’ve been on amiodarone for 2.5 years and happy to stay on it unless the regular blood tests show anything.

As a loading dose yes. They usually start with a higher dose the first week then gradually reduce the dose.
