Afib post ablation

Hello

I had a seemingly successful RFI ablation in 2022 and after a bumpy month have been Afib free for over a year. Yesterday I had an episode of 1 hour ( asymptomatic) Afib after a couple of glasses of " Happy New Year" champagne . ( I know my bad but couldn't resist) Is this a blip I am wondering? I have no problem with an episode here and there ( before the ablation I had episodes of 6 hours every 2 days) . Of course I shall try to see my cardiologist but would be interested in your post - ablation experiences. I know an ablation is not a cure but can certainly lighten the burden of Afib if not eradicate it for a while which I hope is my case.

Any thoughts?

I wish you all a Happy and peaceful 2024.

X

Hi lily pocket, I have not had an abalation so am not the best person to give advice ..But I do know a couple of people who have af and one had an abalation just over two years ago..it seemed to sort him out for a couple of years but he decided to have a couple of pints of cider after a hot day in summer and had an afib episode also..the other person with afib can't have any alcohol at all as that sparks it off for him as well..so from what I can gather alcohol is a trigger for some people for sure...i would try not to let it worry you as it quite common after alcohol and it is most likely just a blip...all the best andyb

Thanks for your reply!Happy New year 🙂

Lesson learned? It was alcohol in any quantity that caused the "funnies" I had for at least ten years before diagnosed.

Yep! Funnily enough red wine has never triggered Afib even before the ablation . I shall steer clear of the bubbly - which is easier to do as it is usually just for celebratory reasons.Happy New Year!

Hi Bob.

We’re you able to drink alcohol after your ablations?

After so many years (probably 30 ) not drnking. why would I risk it? You don't need alcohol to enjoy oneself.

Hi Lilly

I would guess it was sulphite, the preservative in your champagne that triggered your AF. Those of us that can be affected by that additive can sometimes get away with one glass, but no more. Once your heart rate goes back to normal you should be ok again.

Think of sulphite as being a builder of incorrect electrics/muscles of the heart. Drink alcohol with preservatives rarely and just have one small glass and you'll be fine. Keep making your heart beat oddly and yes you'll be back in AF more often as before your ablation.

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year. x

Thank you for your reply Jean . I hope it's just a blip as I have been doing quite well so far. I do have a glass of red wine with my meal in the evening which never triggers Afib. But I don't drink Champagne every day just special occasions so I shall avoid it now 😄Hope it doesn't mean the old Afib is back 🤞

I wish you a happy and healthy 2024 !

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Just lay off alcohol!

I usually have a glass of red with my evening meal which has never caused Afib even before the ablation. But it seems champagne is definitely a trigger. Hope it's just a blip 🙂How are you doing?

It's the fizziness ( too gaseous 😆..) that does it! OK these days thanks. ..as i speak anyhow 😬. I'm prepared for anything. I have a permanent hospital bag packed. I have done so for past 30 years. It started off as a carrier bag and has progressed to something glam from Accessorize 😅

Nothing like being prepared - It sounds like something out of an episode of Absolutely Fabulous 😅Have a great 2024!

Many ep's will tell you that a "successful" ablation doesn't necessarily mean the elimination of afib, but rather a significant reduction in its burden. I think for now you easily fit into that definition of success.

Yes I think so! One episode of 1 hr in a year when it was episodes of 5 or 6 hours every other day before the ablation is definitely a big improvement that I am thankful for.

I had my ablation in September, but am getting ectopics a lot, which is a bit off- putting. I notice them more when in bed or in the mornings. Hoping the AFib doesn’t come back. I’d only had 9 episodes of it, since it first started, during a nasty viral infection in March 2014, so I’ve got my fingers crossed, it doesn’t come back, although it looks like these ectopics are the “new normal. Hope you get on ok.

Hi Sixtychick

I get ectopics too!

But I think you will be fine as you knocked it on the head after only 9 episodes. I had PAfib for 12 years and I think it's a harder nut to crack after so long so will eventually probably need another but not too soon I hope 🤞

Happy 2024 !

Hi Sixtychick and Lilypocket, (I'm female in early sixties) I had a successful ablation last January but there are periodic days that last sometimes a week of ectopics beats and erratic blood pressure. Besides that, most of the time anymore, as well throughout each day my pulse rate is between 75 - 85. 80-85 mostly during the day. Side note - My blood pressure is low already, so when it is erratic it drops even lower. Do either of you have these issues besides the ectopic beats you mentioned? Ty!!! :)

Just taken my BP. Haven’t done it since end November. It’s 138/68, it’s always about the same. My heart rate has been a bit higher since the ablation, around 80 bpm.

Hi Lilypocket

My circumstances are similar to yours. I had AF for 3 + years or so and after struggling with bisoporol which wore me out I had an ablation in September 2022. One episode a week later and then I have been OK since.

I decided I didn't want to be worn out by having AF again so decided 16 months ago not to touch alcohol and haven't touched it since. Occasionally I would very much like a drink but have remained without alcohol since and have been fine since. In my estimation it is not worth the risk.

I have been happy drinking 0% Guinness, 0% Peroni and 0% Gin and Tonic on occasions.

Wishing you all the best for 2024

Hi

Well I have always had a glass of red with supper and in the 12 years I had PAfib it never triggered an episode ( my episodes always happened during the day). Nor after the ablation. I think it was the champagne ( I had no red wine) Anyway I nowadays mostly drink Camomile tea or Peppermint tea and never have anything with caféine.

I wish you a happy 2024 and fingers crossed we will stay Afib free ( I count it as a blip and as Bob said lesson learned 🙂)

Take care .
