hair thinning on metoprolol

hi all, since I have been on metoprolol since July of 2020 I have lost a LOT of hair and recently read that is a side effect. I am a 24 yo female so as you can imagine this has hit my self esteem IMMENSELY. I used to have beautiful thick hair and I now I basically have bald spots on my head :( I’m going to speak to my doctor about trying another beta blocker and was wondering if anyone else dealt with this side effect? and how it was switching from metoprolol to another beta blocker? Thanks in advance!

Hi Dogluvr, I did actually experience this when I was on metoprolol but until now never put the 2 together. I stopped taking it due to a surprise pregnancy and then shortly after restarting it I stopped taking it (after informing my cardiologist) because I just couldn’t tolerate it. I’m not on any beta blocker now but just take ivabradine now.

I have heard that massaging vicks vapour rub into your scalp can aid hair growth as the menthol and eucalyptus in it work to wake up the hair follicles but I can’t provide any scientific research or personal so I would advise you to complete your own research 🙂

I really hope that you can find a solution that helps both your heart and hair because I can certainly empathise with the impact on self esteem. Unfortunately, although my hair did improve it’s still pretty sparse in some areas but I put this down to having 3 children under 5 😂

Keep us posted with how you get on please.

Best wishes

My wife was on Bisoprolol for 4 years and believes it's the cause of her hair loss. So, switching Beta Blocker may not solve your problem. Definitely speak to your GP as there may be supplements or medicated shampoos that might help.

Have you had thyroid tests done recently as hairloss is one of the main symptoms along with heart issues.

Unfortunately, hair loss is a common side effect of most beta blockers.

Hi

Metoprolol is an awful drug for me.

I didn't want it after stroke but still given it! Apart from breathlessness getting up my driveway, fatigue and couldn't do any exertion of any kind.

A 24-hr monitor shoed H/R 187 Day, 2 pauses x 2 secs at night...

2 years 5 months later when I demanded a heart specialist.

Changed immediately to Bisoprolol which has no breathing side effects and is better BB for AFers.

While BB controls BP later a private H/Specialist introduced CCB blocks calcium as BB blocks adrenaline. Are you an anxious person?

Hair loss oh I feel for you. Some shampoos which cost more give back to your lovely hair and I would talk to your top hairdresser. Buy from her . I use an oil based shampoo and towel dry and use the Moraccon oil drawn through the hair.

If in the past using hard rollers, bleaching hair this could follow you around. I never did.

On any BB it could mean some hair loss but now on 2.5 Bisoprolol I pull out a few silver but not the black.

Drs generally dont change you but will refer you to a Heart Specialist. Either public or private.

You are just a young lass and I hope it can be solved for you.

cheers Joy. 74. (NZ)

Thank you so much! I started using hair oils so I’m really hoping that starts to work. It’s just so frustrating because metoprolol works really well for me but I have lost SO much hair, it’s so embarrassing. I am really hoping that something gives.

Hi

Metoprolol is a dangerous med.

1. Asthmatics shud not have it.

2. BB Bisoprolol does not interfere with breath. I am also breathing problems with ACE BB.

As I said have a 24hr - monitor that will show what M.... is doing to you.

Best

Hi again

Remembered I use Tee Tree Australian OIL shampoo and it also helps as an anti-dandruff.

Hi

And you love your dog/dogs.

I love dogs too small mini schnauzers best. I bred them in UK and NZ, I bred my American line with a Bristol line ( gay men also breeding poodles) and then with a Risepark owner. Lovely lines. Black and Silver mostly.

I cant see the advantage of getting to all black or white only. These beautiful dogs lose their wonderful pedigree marks!

Yes, great for health to care and train dogs. Pat, cuddle amd walk your dog for optimizing health.

Woof from my 9 year old Black and Silver JAZ.

cheers JOY

Good luck on this one from what I can gather from my hairstylist it’s not just in trouble lol in fact, even getting anesthesia does a number on your hair. I had my hair start to thin before I was on it and had been on several different medication‘s. I look at pictures of my hair from two years ago. I can’t believe the difference and not in a good way😢

Hi, Antenotol is another beta blocker that causes hair loss which I take and the only side effect that I get from it is hair loss, I have been on 6/7 different pills that have made me so ill that I was willing to put up with the Atenolol hair-loss.

Someone suggested to me using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and also there is a Nioxin Sandalore anti-hair loss treatment that you can buy in Boots the chemist and it works wonders, I have been using mine for over a year now and hardly have any hair loss at all.

Hope this helps

hello Dogluvr95

I take Bisoprolol and my hair started thinning out a lot especially on the top. I bought a product called Thick Tails and it has really made a big difference. My hairdresser comments frequently how much thicker my hair is and it looks thicker too.

You will find the company online, it’s not cheap, £20 each for the shampoo and conditioner but well worth it. You only need a tiny amount so lasts for ages.

Hope this is useful.

How many mg do you take! I take 25 a day and I have notice my hair is thinner too, I thought it was my age!

Hair loss is not listed as a side effect of Metoprolol. Suppose that doesn't mean it is not possible.

Recommend you discuss with your doctor. Also, if not recent, a complete blood test would be good to see if any effect of Metoprolol and any other areas of your system.

Also note that stress can cause hair loss. At the age of 24, you have an excellent chance of defeating afib/flutter, whichever your issue. Best to you !
