Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) Now Offered in UK

There has been some discussion, as to whether Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) is being offered out of trial in the UK. Here is what I found out a few months ago.

1. It is out of trial and being offered as a "matter of routine" at least at Royal Papworth, which ran the first UK trial.

2. They are accepting private patients both from the UK and abroad and the wait is not that long.

3. I'm assuming they are accepting NHS patients, but did not ask any questions about that.

3. As of a few months ago, each of the investigators had done about 20 PFA's, although hundreds per year of other types. I'm sure by now, that number has doubled or more.

4. The ep's doing the ablations are Dr. David Begley, Dr. Claire Martin and Dr. Patrick Heck.

5. It is currently being done under General Anesthesia (GA) only.

6. PFA for now is mainly just for the Pulmonary veins (PVI). However, they will treat arrhythmia's from other focal points, like aflutter, during the same procedure using RF.

5. As mentioned, this information is several months old, so anyone interested should contact the ep's at Royal Papworth directly for current info.

Yes, glad I came across your article mjames1. I checked on PFA in the USA. They just had a conference in New Orleans last month. Seems like if I wanted to do an ablation, I would definitely go for the PFA. Of course the USA probably won't approve it for another 3 years they mentioned. Everything revolves around the FDA here.

Word was it was 1-2 years but haven't checked recently.

Read an article just now that said FDA may approve it next year. 2024. That would be great.
