Seeing things

hello does anyone have or know of any incidents

Of seeing things that are not there for example

My husband started by saying he could see thinks

Crawling on the bed and would try and pick them of the quilt the sheet and when he handed them to me it was fluff or a crumb from him eating etc

Which was alarming enough I had the gp call but he tried to explain that he wasn’t really seeing anything but to no avail unfortunately now he thinks the people on television are actually looking and talking to him even when I try to explain that the people are in a studio somewhere with a camera crew he just laughs and says he knows but refuses to see the doctor saying he is not nuts his words I’m not coping well with this new symptom

Any help or advice please I would be so grateful

Morning on early morning commute so forgive the typing. My brother in law recently experienced similar symptoms, went on for two months, he was admitted into hospital where they discovered he had an infection which was the cause and said it was delerium. He is fully recovered now. Maybe worth checking no infections causing this .

Hi, I'm no medic and it could be many things but your GP should be involved. My late mum had Lewy Body Dementia and seeing things is one of its characteristics.

Many things can cause these types of symptoms, including medications which don’t suit occasionally. I think a thorough work up and evaluation is required so push your GP to investigate.

An investigation is definitely needed as you and hubby need answers. Wishing you both well. X

I agree with Slm above too,

Have they checked if your husband has an infection? Typically, a water infection? My dad got these often and he said and did very similar things.

Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

Yes I have seen this happen with my Dad and Uncle from urinary infections. Make sure he is checked by the GP. Has he had any new medications or a change in medication as there could be a new medication or the way a new medication interacts with another. A couple of times I have looked up my medications and found that they are contraindicated with other medication I am taking so had the GP change them.

My grandmother had this after having one of her heart tablets switched. It was caused by an imbalance of potassium in her blood, if I recall, and was instantly solved by a change of tablets.

my mum had this and it’s well know that people with usually bladder infections hallucinate so first thing is to get a urine test. Preferably one that goes to hospital lab not a dip one in GP surgery

Otherwise maybe he is on meds that don’t agree

Without worrying you, and I’m sure this is NOT the case, but my gran had hallucinations seeing monkeys sitting on her piano and was the start of mild dementia, but don’t worry about this do get a urine test for your hubby first as this is often the cause

Hope all will be well

Yes, I'm sorry to say that my mother in laws Alzheimer's started with her saying that the people on tv were talking to her. Then she kept calling things 'clouds'. It was just mild at first, but gradually grew.

Another very gentle natured elderly lady I knew suddenly turned very nasty towards her son, it was discovered she had a water infection.

Saying things are crawling on the bed, or seeing people is a very common thing - happens to both young and old people.

Have any of his meds been changed recently, this can cause a similar reaction. Is he frightened by these incidents or just insistent that’s he’s correct. Also infections, constipation and numerous other conditions can cause hallucinations and delusional thoughts. Get him checked out by your gp asap please.

in reply to 4chickens

no not all frightened by them just convinced he right no med changes

I agree with the others about insisting on further checks, and the simplest quickest one would be to check for a urine infection which can cause all the symptoms your husband is displaying. I do hope there is a simple, easily treated explanation.

People with sight loss sometimes see things that aren’t there but I don’t think that extends to thinking people on the TV are ‘real’. Even my cat worked that out - a lion roared in her face and she didn’t budge an inch! When you say ‘new symptoms’ what are the previous ones?

I see he has kidney problems as well as heart etc. I would call 111 or get in touch with the relevant dr urgently.

in reply to Buffafly

just the seeing things crawling first then the tub episodes but he is really convinced they can see and talk to him I laugh but my mum had dementia and the signs are scary to me

My later mother in law told us that her cat had long hairs coming out of it's face, so she'd cut them off. It was her beautiful cats whiskers. this was one of the very early signs of her illness.

yes my husband has just told me he was speaking to Gary Neville last night was hoping it had something to do with oxygen getter to his brain but beginning to think the damage has already been done 😞

When my dad was in hospital, he thought that there was a drugs raid in the night and the very elderly chap next to him had been smuggling drugs 😳 also, that his curtains around his bed caught fire in the night….it did turn out it was all urine infections. He used to get a lot.

When my Dad was in a nursing home, he had similar instances whenever he had a urinary tract infection.

Vascular dementia can cause this, as can the various conditions mentioned above. Even straightforward infections in an older person can cause hallucinations. It’s impossible to say as there are so many potential causes so he definitely needs to see his GP at the very least, but understand your frustration when he is reluctant to seek any kind of medical care.

My late mother also frequently saw insects or things falling from the ceilings. She was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. In addition to confusion, the hallucinations were terrifying to her.

Hi Lou,

It sounds like 'Charles Bonnet Syndrome'. My mother-in-law experienced this in her older age this with diminishing eye-sight, It would be worth checking it out. We discovered a few doctors who hadn't come across it.

My elderly father suffered from dementia and latterly thought things he saw on TV was his reality. It certainly needs checked out, but has no AF connection as far as I'm aware.

I hope you will be able to sort out what's causing these strange sightings. No wonder you are not coping well! I must be very worrying. Let us know how you go on. Best of luck and best wishes x
