I have had Furosemide added to my prescription due to fluid retention in my feet and ankles, due to mild heart failure associated to persistent AF. There are loads of side effects associated with it. GP says we have to monitor kidney function closely as I am stage 3CKD. Just wondered if anyone on here takes it. Would be interested in your views. I am a bit of a worry wart as some of you know. Thank you in advance.

Hi,effects of furosimide are very dose dependent. Your electrolytes particularly potassium and sodium should be monitored closely. With CKD your creatinine and BUN need checked frequently as well.. I would think weekly for all blood tests in the beginning. . I am sure your prescribing doc would see to this..

You should be able to find a balance between efficacy and side effects. Best, etheral

I think all drugs for fluid retention are well tolerated and frusemide is maybe the most widely prescribed. However, I know it can cause quite sudden electrolyte issues that can show in the oddest of ways as happened with my grandmother who, despite being entirely with it. suddenly started imagining that WW2 was still happening! A quick blood test and dose adjustment and all was just as quickly back to normal.

Hi

Alternative is to put your feet up at night (above your heart) and during the day when you can.

Could it be one of your AF drugs like a CCB Calcium Channel Blocker?

Heat, staying still (sitting or non exercise) can do it.

Replacement minerals could be eating a banana a day.

Are your feet and ankles up all the time?

Last year I had a fall and as a consequence broke my hip, since surgery not one but both legs have been badly swollen with the need to wear those wretched compression stockings. This was April 2022 so a year later GP has prescribed Furosimide with a blood test every 4 weeks. Last week I was diagnosed with heart failure and persistent A/F. To say it was a shock is an understatement, I wear a Pacemaker and take drugs so haven't really felt any heart problem except developing a cough, dizziness and breathless over the past year or so, the medics have been going down the lung route for diagnosis although earlier X-ray showed clear, but prescribed pumps etc, and the fluid retention so now waiting to see a cardiologist for an Echo to see what damage has been done to the heart muscle itself. The Furosimide has taken the fluid away from my legs, my Bisoporal has been increased so now just waiting to see what happens next. I am 79 years of age and prior to my hip, broken during a game of table tennis, I was both fit and active so a lot seems to have happened in the last year and life has definitely changed and not for the better lol.
