Amiodarone is a drug of last resort and has many dangerous affects, however, my husband has now been taking it for about 4 years now and apart from having to stay out of the sun completely as he already had many BCC’s and other various skin lesions removed, has not suffered any of the more serious affects. He has done very well on it as it was the only treatment which has stopped his AF. He tolerates most drugs quite well.

Generally speaking, Amiodarone is advised for short term treatment.

Similar to CDreamer's husband, I've been on Amiodarone for 4 years or so. In conjunction with my cardiologist, my dosage is now 200mg three times a week. That level has kept afib in check for at least a year. I get my thyroid, eyes and liver checked a couple of times a year, but I avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. Apart from that, so far so good. Works for me!

I tolerated it but didn't seem to do much for my PAF as it had a mind if it's own. Some minor side effects were slight trembling of hands and some disturbing dreams.

Have you read this? I found it very interesting given that the internet, or at least social media type websites are not the place for gathering this kind of useful information, generally:

This might help (the conclusions of the study of 900 patients):

"To our knowledge, our study is the first meta-analysis to investigate the side effects of “low”-dose amiodarone [200mg/day or less] commonly used in current clinical practice. The incidence of side effects requiring medication discontinuation is estimated to be 4%, which is just one-quarter of that reported by Vorperian et al.3 Moreover, none of the surveyed studies demonstrated mortality and many only rarely reported irreversible side effects due to amiodarone administration."

my husband was taking amiodarone for af. After 6 months he started to feel really unwell, really faint and dizzy, nauseous and weak. His blood pressure was really low. Stopped taking it and feeling fine within a couple of weeks.

Like every drug, even OTC, there are side effects, but that does not mean you will experience any of them. Do read the package insert for the medication. It's a good idea for any and all meds you take to read the package insert, and now very easy to do online.
