I would imagine it depends on the surgeon and whether it thinks it is worth the risk. My husband had a general for a cataract op. done privately. He was very scared and the surgeon thought it worthwhile in order that my husband kept still for the op. He did not have any heart or blood pressure problems either.
I have only ever had sedation for hip replacement and total knee replacement operations the hip replacement was done before AFib and the knee replacement after AFib but was in NSR before during and after operation as had a successful cardio version a couple of months before. I would always choose sedation over GA if possible but that’s my personal choice, unless surgeon and anaesthetist suggested otherwise but so long as they both agree and your cardiologist and or EP are aware and are OK with the GA then I am sure there is no problem.
HiSome of us are on Replacement Thyroid daily meds and cannot have a sppinal block plus that can cause bleeding.
I have had 2 ops with AF. I was not controlled for the removal of thyroid and 12 lymph nodes due to Papillary Cancer, done within 4 months of Embollic Stroke. This year had another 1 hr and I explained again GA .
My choice is a GA. regardless. Complications of bleeding with a spinal Block.

HiYes if your H/R is controlled under 100.
You will have a preop appmt with your Anaesthetist. He will test you and warn you....
Sop anti-coagulant 3 clear days prior , the day after and 3 days after. Clear means 24 hrs on that day.

I had an hour op in March. For pain after the op OXY=NORM and Paracetomol
I have had two GAs recently and no problems at all. I had to stop Apixaban a day before and restarted a day after.
Thanks so much for that, I am very nervous, but that does help.
You will be so pleased once you have the cataracts done so I am told. I know I can’t wait to get mine done. Wait on NHS here is 18 months and can’t even get to see specialist at a private hospital through Benenden until
October 3rd. As my cataracts are fast growing I really need them done as literally can see my sight getting worse week on week. I think by the end of this month I will give up driving until after both my cataracts are done
Yes, I have had a couple of operations under GA whilst on Apixaban. Make sure they know about it so the pre-op team can give the appropriate guidance re stopping and restarting the anticoagulant. The guidance seems to vary somewhat between hospitals and/or surgeonsGood luck
Thanks for the reply, you will think me very silly because I am only having cataracts removed but I am just terrified of anyone coming near my eyes, goes back to something in my childhood, but I am hoping that I will only need to be under for a very short time.
Nothing silly about being careful with your eyes Good luck with the op
Absolutely not. Your eyes are precious. I am having both eyes done soon too. The cataracts are just starting to grow very fast so given emergency referral but NHS wait is 18 months here. So going via Benenden. My wife had her cataracts done 10 years ago via Benenden at a local private hospital and a fantastic job done. The worst cataract was done about 3 weeks before the second one. She asked for local anaesthetic and no sedation because she reacts to sedation weirdly and also pre meds. I may have local and sedation as I am not too sure about just local myself.
Hi Nemesis, I was lucky to have both eyes done last summer and like you I was terrified!!
I asked the surgeon if I would see anything coming towards my eye and he assured me that I would not! He said all I would see were bright lights and feel nothing!! This proved to be true !!
The professionalism of the surgical team was exemplary, guiding me through the procedure with kindness and reassurance. There is even someone there to hold your hand , which I found particularly comforting!!
Afterwords what a difference you will
experience with your new eyesight !
Everything is clear, colours are brighter,
the whole world looks different!!
Hope this helps
Good luck!!
Regards Lynne
Not sure the nhs will let you have a GA.In any case they do cataracts one at a time never both together.
