Can I drink Alcohol?

Ok. I’m at 68 year old male who had three ablations over 3 years. they didn’t work went on Tykosyn worked great for about three years but was getting dangerous numbers QTC numbers so I stopped to tykison now in persistent Afib but in the middle of all this I have 100% heart block because Covid blew out my fuse box ( was vaccinated) I have a 3 lead pacemaker now. It’s like I had an av node ablation. 100% pacemaker dependent I take metoperal 50 twice a day heart is purring around 70 and have no tachycardia but get out of breath after walking briskly because chambers are out of sync. When I stop it drops right back to 70. Will be getting one more ablation in a couple months because I want to be able to exercise.

My question is being that I’m in persistent a fib and I don’t get tachycardia can I drink now moderately until I have my ablation?

I know it sounds crazy but would like an occasional wine or scotch.

It is known that stimulants can increase symptoms and further 'episodes' of AF. It is advisable to reduce or eliminate stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol. It is important to keep hydrated and maintain a good healthy weight and follow a balanced diet too. You may find it helpful to visit: heartrhythmalliance.org/afa... and download our 'AF & You' booklet for further advice and information.

I was told I can have the occasional glass of beer, wine, whisky or a G&T I rarely go out to drink so ensure my measures are smaller than you would get at a pub. I would say I drink the equivalent of 4 units of alcohol a fortnight with my measures I have no problems. When and if I go to a gathering I have a small beer or glass of wine.

You can drink (though definitely not to excess) as long as it doesn’t affect your symptoms so up to you to try it and see 😀 I have a very small sherry and occasionally a small glass of ‘social wine’ with a meal and as far as I can tell it doesn’t affect me. Not crazy 🤪

I'm interested that you say your heart chambers are out of sync and that makes you breathless. I am still very breathless after pace and ablate but didn't think that any more ablations could be done. What will they ablate for you? How do I know if my heart chambers are out of sync?

Hey Barb my two top chambers are pacing fine because of the three lead pacemaker but my upper right chamber I’m either in a flutter or a fib I’m going for one more ablation hopefully that’ll get rid of the a fib. I did have a minor adjustment yesterday lowered my rest time to 60 and did some adjustments on my increased activity to see if it helps. I’ll keep you posted.

What does your EP say? It could cause a bit of tachycardia, but maybe that would be worth it. Pleasure is good for us.
