A/Fib and Diabetes

Hi there everyone. Long story short diagnosed with A Fib and on Sotalol twice daily [40mg dose]. Is there or does anyone else have type 2 diabetes [recent diagnosis after blood test/hypos] any connection between both of these. I also have Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis and just wondered if they are all connected in some way or just coincidence. Thanks

Only in as much as both seem exacerbated by being overweight and poor diet. Thyroid problems can again bring on arrhythmias as well.

Hi Bob, yes am overweight but dieting brings on Hypos so it's a constant cycle for me just now but been referred to diabetic nurse so I'm really hoping that I'll get the balance right between diet/exercise and hypos and keep the weight off for good and improve everything along the way. My diet is healthy overall apart from the 'sugar' cravings. My exercise is limited at the moment because of Sotalol and weight but I push myself when am out walking and hope to get back on my bike eventually.

A few years ago I slipped into the pre diabetic range at an annual blood test. I stopped all sugar in tea and coffee, lost a stone and a half by cutting down on supper and the next year I was clear. Can't walk far due to arthritis but managing to keep the weight off. Life style works diets don't. I really was not going to get lectured every month by some self righteous nurse however well intentioned! lol 😁

Aye I ken. This will be my first ever visit as I was pre-diabetic for last few years. I to have osteoarthritis in hands/feet/knees so losing weight will help this to. To be honest I really don't eat big meals/no fried food/no carry outs/eat veg/fruit/no sugar on cereals or tea/coffee but sweet things are my downfall like cakes/biscuits/chocolate - it's almost like an addiction, maybe it is but it's time to get it sorted out and more balanced so I can lead a more active and healthy lifestyle and get out of the 'diabetic range'

My AF was a lot worse when thyroid was inflamed now both have settled and no AF for about 18 months. Try and find something savoury you like and substitute for cakes etc. It takes a little while but you’ll lose the sugar craving. Good luck. P s sotalol not used much now.

That's interesting about your comment about Sotalol not being used much now. Would be interested to know why if you know. I was on Bisoprolol to start with but it was no use/didn't haver any effect on the A Fib. Thanks

I don’t have full details but it’s effects were not thought ok but some doctors still use it if other things don’t work. BobD might know more on this

Thanks rosyG. I did a bit of research myself about side effects, but it seems to agree with me but the episodes still manage to break through. I also have chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and it says it can 'hide' levels but I guess the Cardiologist has taken this into consideration. I was taking Bisprolol but after Cardioversion they just wouldn't work, but been taking the Sotalol since last October. Thanks again.
