Learning all the time

Hi All, As a relative newbie I have found this site so helpful in learning about AF but I do think it would be great to have a glossary of abbreviations for new members. SVT, PIP, CHAD etc were all alien to me although I now know what they stand for from posts where members clarify the meanings.

Im still waiting to learn what the treatment plan is for me following series of tests about 5 weeks ago. Remain on warfarin ( heart valve replacement) and 5mg Bisoprolol morning and night but heart rate remains high and unable to exercise (walk) without experiencing some discomfort in my chest and getting breathless too.

Thank you all for your posts. I may not contribute much but I do read them,

Bob - I just looked for the - rather ancient abbreviation post which used to be on Pinned Post on my mobile - no Abbreviation post shows in pinned posts on my mobile - and I couldn’t find it with a search - what hope a newbie? I would say more people use mobile device than computers these days.

A nudge to update and post a link that shows on all devices? Pretty please.

Here’s the link Daisy but it is 4 years old so you have to scroll down forever to find and some of the abbreviations have now changed - see my reply to Bob.

Thanks so much. Its like a foreign language when you first get diagnosed so any information is really helpful,

Great idea. My favourite is PAF. Since paroxysmal, persistent and permanent all begin with a P!

That’s quite a high dose of bisoprolol, so that maybe that is contributing to your feeling a bit washed out at times. I took that dose before my ablation for atrial flutter in 2019, but it didn’t help much until digoxin was added. That was really effective and allowed the bisoprolol dose to be dropped right down and I felt altogether much better. Like you, the bisoprolol seemed to cause me chest discomfort on exercise, not painful but quite unpleasant and anxiety-inducing. Like you, also, I’ve since had frequent episodes of mild tachycardia (85-125bpm) and very occasional AF.

Once your results are back, your doctor will be well placed to work out what is going on, but from what you’ve said, it sounds like an “electrical” issue. This can be caused, I gather, by heart valve replacement as well as any slight enlargement issues.

Thanks Steve. Its always good to know you are not alone with your particular issue. I was only on 5mg Bisoprolol daily and had been for a year or more when I started to experience the breathlessness and discomfort and my GP then upped it to 5mg twice daily. My resting heart rate seems to be high even on that dose so I do hope they get to the bottom of what's causing my problems. I am starting to wonder if its caused by a problem with the arteries and the tests so far haven't resulted in a diagnosis.

Hi Daisy

That sounds unlikely to me. I don’t know your age but from what you describe, it’ll likely be a conduction (arrhythmia) issue. Keep us posted and I hope all goes well.
