Didn’t notice I was in Afib , checked watch as I usually do and thought “ that’s not right “ , checked pulse and heart sank ..heartbeat to the tune of old king Cole was back .
Did I miss a tablet the previous morning ? maybe ….
Perhaps it was the swimming on Friday…
Dehydrated … ? was it the very strong coffee ..
As ever with this pathetic condition … not really sure .
Anyway , here I am , back on this forum .
I’d rather not be on here ( not because of others on here , as the community is very helpful ) , but because it means I’m back in this scenario again .
So to briefly update everyone .
46 year old athlete person .
Backed off a lot ( from training ) after last episode , but then gradually rebuilt training up to 7-8 hours a week …. ( I don’t do the super hard efforts any more - hard sparingly , but not the super hard stuff ).
This seemed to be working well .
Take magnesium supplement every day also.
1 x50 mg tablet am , 2x50 mg tablet flec pm.
So has it just finally caught up with me again ?
For now I have upped it to 2x50 mg am and pm .
Hoping this can hold it off … if it fails I will seriously cut back training again .
Reason I am here today is that I’m hoping for some new treatment for this other than ablation / fleccainide .
Being 46 I’m hoping that I can hold this off by using fleccainide until I retire late 50s where I will then have an ablation or have some new radical treatment ???
So my question :-
What future treatments are in the pipeline ?
Other than effectively trying to weld a moving object ( ablation )

Don't understand what you're waiting for here! Why will waiting till you're retired before having ablation make a difference? If you're in the UK I'd grab it while it's still free. Most people report an improvement after ablation- what's to lose?
If you didn't notice it, it surely isn't a problem. Treatment is only to alleviate the symptoms and anticoagulants to prevent strokes. What does your cardiologist say about hard exercise? I am not aware of my permanent afib most of the time, but it feels worse if I do hard exercise. After a while it settles. Worrying also makes it worse. Wait awhile and see if the afib has gone again and then possibly reduce the level of exercise a little.
You need to consult your cardiologist about future treatments. Every case is different.
Like you,I also have not had an episode in over a year, but because of the kind folks here, and the sharing of their wealth and breadth of experiences and advice, I “hang out”...because, I was told by everyone here, in no certain terms, that it never resolves itself, just goes into remission. Needless to say, I was gutted. Also being very athletic and being fit, and eating healthy being a large part of my life, made me curse my condition.
To have the whole concept of “healthy life healthy heart” go swirling down the toilet so young in life is kinda soul crushing. Wrapping ones head around taking drugs for life was also a hard concept for me to grasp, but time, and stable heart found me with less self pity and more appreciation 🙂
These are good people here, and every single situation is different, so appreciate the feedback and input from all.
Having said all that, have you talked to your doc about changing meds?
They got. One wrong out of the gate, quickly corrected that, and I’ve been right as rain and no, not extreme sports, but an hour or 2 on the gravelbike @135-145 does not make me sweat on a cool day.
'Future treatments in the pipeline' probably the one with the most potential and accessible is Lifestyle changes. Once hardly mentioned by medics, now I think broadly accepted as one of the pillars of recovery. Have you seen the Afib Cure book by Dr John Day. The best detail for the various changes to try also appear on this Forum.
Be wary of ditching Flecainide. I have been on 200mgs/day for 8 years without any known problems; the record holder on this Forum is 35 years! I was determined to get off it after 6 months but rightly or wrongly AF free and with good quality of life I keep kicking that can further down the road.
I've seen the laser X3 treatment, it's fairly new (1.5 -2 yrs) recently got go ahead in USA and Europe. Ablation via laser pulse with added bonus that the ep can see what they are doing through a camera in the end. They can see what scar they have made, if they have missed bits. I haven't seen any efficacy figures yet too new, but it is supposed to reduce time of procedure drastically.
I'm in the same boat. Fit, slim, good diet but obviously didn't choose my ancestors wisely. First ablation lasted eight months from may 2020 to March 2021. second ablation lasted from April 2021 to September 2021 and now had third this January. It's certainly NOT FAIR but life isn't. Keep your chin and pm if you'd like to.
