Help

I’m supposed to start taking AC’s as it’s 4 weeks until my ablation and I’ve just read the side affects for Rivaroxaban .

And to be honest 1-10 odds of getting one of these side affects is making me consider even going through with the ablation .

Is anyone else on that same as me is there any advice for this 10-1 odds seems a high risk

Thanks

Matt

Consider this. Thanks to our friends across the big pond, there is a huge industry in legal claims against doctors and pharma. As a result companies have to protect themselves by advising of any possible thing , however unlikely, that could result from the use of their products. They seldom do. Think what terrible things might be on a warning list for something as simple as tooth paste!

Seriously don't believe everythng that you read. There are risks in everything, even doing nothing. . Milions of people take anticoagulants every day with zero problems.

Cheers Bob , but are there any that are perceived better than others ?

I think whatever suits each person. I've been on warfarin since 2004 with absolutely no issues at all. Rivaroxaban is well considered by many people but it is important to take it with food, not just a slice of toast either, a proper meal, or it is poorly absorbed leaving the possibility of reduced protection . Many CCGs seem to prefer edoxaban I suspect due to pricing issues but all the DOACS work fine and are safe.

I have been on Rivaroxaban for 5 years without any issues at all and I have had two ablations. When I was first offered an ablation I tried to find excuses as to why I shouldn't have it done then I realised I didn't overly trust the particular consultant at the time, that changed when my current consultant was very kind and understanding about my apprehension and gave me so much confidence. So pleased I did.

Hi.

Was in the same situation as you and indeed put off having an ablation because I was so anxious about being on rivaroxaban. Finally bit the bullet last year and had to be on it for two and a half months in total pre and post procedure. Had no issues whatsoever and , in a strange way now miss the perceived protection it gave me. The ablation seems to have sorted me out too so I see it as having been short term pain for long term gain.

I,ve been on Xeralto since 2014 , had operations without even stopping the dose..

Never had any problems except for slightly slower clotting with cuts.

I take it first thing in the morning which can be half to one hour before breakfast.

Hi - a drug package leaflet is often a fearful thing to read. If you have AF you will have to take a DOAC-type drug at some point and rivaroxaban is one of the best there is, and safest. I think you can rest easy over any minor side effects it might cause initially. I had none whatsoever.

What Bob said, and, I am on Xeralto...with or without food, have bashed and gashed myself a few times, and haven't lost any more blood than usual...and I didn't alter my risk factors... cycling, chainsaws, knife sharpening etc, at all. From what Ive read, it seems internal bleeding is the biggest concern, and I try not to swallow swords, and check my Halloween apples and candy before I eat them....but seriously, one is required to inform surgical medical teams before going under the knife so you can stop taking them beforehand.

Some feel more secure wearing a medical-alert bracelet.

Reminder; these do not "thin" your blood, and "anti" is also a bit of a misnomer...they slow down the clotting process, but don't stop it.

And of course, consult your doctor and Pharmacist 🙂

Totally understand your feelings on this - when I was diagnosed with AF, it took me AGES to get my head round taking anticoagulants.

The list of potential side effects are enough to freak anyone out! But it’s so, so unlikely to have any effect that is problematic. Once I started taking rivaroxaban, I haven’t looked back - and am so grateful for the protection that anticoagulants give.

So I fully understand your misgivings, but my advice would be not to let it put you off having an ablation. :) J x

Just remember that you may not get any side effects you may get some they may be bad or just light side effects. If you get bad side effects ask to change to a different one.

I was on warafin five years ago and had no issues. Got off it it after ablation. Afib is back and they put my on Xarelto 5 weeks ago. Two weeks ago got a horrible nose bleed. Took 8 hours in the ER to stop it and the most painful procedure of my life, worse than open-heart surgery. Got discharged in 3 days as had to go to surgery for carterization. Then two days after discharge persistent AFIB so another hospitalization. My blood count was down to 8.5 and had to change all my meds. I totally blame it all on Xarelto. They changed me over to Eliquis but I am afraid to start it.
