Hgv licence and atrial fibrillation uk
G'day Biglad1,
Not HGV but PCV - more or less same hoops to jump through. Was 65 when first diagnosed with paroxysmal AF ( and assessed as being asymptomatic into the bargain) and driving buses. Now 77 and still drivin buses - but not workin' the shifts to the extent I used to.
If you think I can help ask away.
John
How many hoops did u have to jump through?
In the beginning DVLA revoked my PCV licence only. Kept my other licences, car etc. But, to be honest I didn't care about driving. Didn't care about anything. I was effectively off the road for 3 months. Heavens, it was taking me 30 minutes or more to walk a distance I can now do in 10 minutes or less.Initially I was put on Bisoprolol and Warfarin to deal with AF and it's more sinister aspects. Cardio guy tweaked my other meds, statins, and BP doses. So, I ended up on statins, BP meds, Bisoprolol and Warfarin. Now, 12 years later I'm still on the same, although my GP has increased my Bisoprolol from 5mg to 7.5mg.
I have never needed ablation.
Once I turned 70 I became entitled to annual medical reviews to satisfy DVLA I was a fit and proper person to drive a bus. I have had these every year and had my PCV renewed no sweat. I also use diet as a means of controlling AF. I can manage 10 to 12 hour shifts ( with the appropriate breaks from driving) but I pace myself when not working. There is a section on DVLA website - medical services section which discusses the pros and cons of AF which you may find useful if you haven't already found it.

Hi there, I’m a truck driver , the first AFIB episode was awful and I was advised by the hospital to tell dvla, but two ablations later I’ve still got my license, I do not drive hgv at the moment because not long had 2nd ablation and want to be settled and stable before I venture back in to it.
