I attended A& E twice last week with my usual, for no apparent reason, rapid over 110 bpm heartbeat which was still going after 5 hours. Longest has been 3 hours. I do not feel dizzy or any pain just heart very weakly beating in throat. Had ECG etc eventually went whilst doctor taking pulse. Dropped from 130 to 65. I usually feel rush of blood to head when they stop. I have still not had a firm diagnosis. Doctor said probably sinus tachycardia whilst my last hospital visit was told probable SVT. I have had these episode since my 40s. Have been on 25mg Atenolol for about 25 years. Am now 70, my episodes increasing plus am stopping many with deep breath held in throat . No signs of AF. Doctor said to attend A&E if heart rate exceeds 180 bpm. Does anybody else have these symptoms. Any tricks for stopping them or different meds. Thanks Linda

Hi - I don’t worry about my HR unless it stays over 130 for any length of time. Tachycardia is a HR of 120+.

Long, slow, deep breaths and relaxing usually returns HR down to 60-80 fairly quickly. You might want to note any triggers - after eating? Certain foods/drinks? Exercise? Sleep? Posture?

You might want to look at soothing vagus nerve solutions? Favourites are singing, Yoga, cold showers, breath work. The fact that you are stopping them by breath indicates vagus nerve involvement.

Thanks for reply C Dreamer

I am never aware of my heartbeat but do wear a Fitbit. I do an hour long walk every day to push my heart rate up but when in an arrythmia my heart not beating efficiently therefore affects BP and energy.

Yep definitely vagal. Have not tried singing. Will give it a shot. Talking sometimes puts them away. Chocolate a definite trigger but well am trying my best.

Hi Lbeat796, I was diagnosed with sinus tachycardia 9 years ago following a pulmonary embolism which caused SVT for a few months. I had an unsuccessful ablation but have suffered from Sinus tachycardia ever since. Mine is definitely vagal and bending down can cause it. Luckily it usually only lasts for about half an hour but if it wakes me up can go on longer. It is fairly infrequent so am not on any medication. Strange as it may seem if I take an antacid or suck a strong peppermint that will make me belch and that seems to stop it! Take care. Lauren Nat.

Thanks for your reply Lauren. Mine definitely vagal with bending down or turning head sharply causing them. They are becoming more frequent as I get older but not as severe. I will try your antacid remedy. Linda
