Aplidin

An article from the journal, "Science", reported the drug Aplidin was effective in fighting coronavirus in lab mice. It's a drug used to treat cancer. It's also been found to be 27.5 times more effective than Remdesivir. The drug was developed in Spain from a marine animal. The drug has gone through Phase I I trial against covid and awaiting Phase III. Research has been done at the University of California San Francisco since March 2020. The UC San Francisco sought out drugs that would protect key human proteins from being hijacked by the virus. The research needs confirmation in human trials. A second study, not yet published or peer reviewed, suggests Aplidin is equally effective against the new variant in the UK.

That is good news. Before I read the article about this drug, I'd read an article in which the CEO of Moderna said this virus will continue to mutate forever and like the flu, a shot will be needed every year. But if there are other treatments, that's even better. Someone in Minnesota, had been to Brazil and came back with the Brazilian strain of covid. (I don't understand what people are thinking. ) Plus the UK strain is here. But I think I read it was here in the USA even before the UK reported it. Other new strains from other countries are here. Do I think the USA will get a handle on the virus? My hopes are not high. Even with the vaccines. They don't stop transmission. As long as people still fly everywhere and around the country. And don't even bother to follow the guidelines. With all the protests and riots. 😞And now Biden has opened up the borders again and illegals are coming more and more and border control cannot handle them. And guess what those illegals are bringing with them? The virus. I'm sorry if some may be offended by that. But it's true. And when the cases surge, no one can blame Trump. This will be on Biden. I can only pray to God to save us. Our politicians have totally lost their minds. 🙄😞

I think it quite wrong to talk about UK or South African strains just as it was wrong to talk about Spanish flu in 1918 (that was from China too apparently) just because it was reported in Spain.

Any virus mutates constantly and such mutations will appear simultaneously in various regions and countries. One can only hope that at some time it mutates into a harmless cold.

Just how it's reported in the news and the article I read. I too hope someday it's like the common cold.

I think the Spanish flu was spread by a soldier stationed in a military base in the state of Kansas, where I'm originally from.....

First found in a transit camp in France according to what I have read but suspected as having come from China. At that time there was a complete news black out on it across Europe but when the Prince of Spain got it the news went public hence it being refered to as Spanish flu. I remember my Grandmother telling me all about it as she lost two brothers.

Huh. According to history.com the actual origination of the Spanish flu is not known. It was said it could have originated in France, Spain, China or the USA. Spain was neutral doing WWI and did not have blackouts. So they were able to report about the flu. The countries in blackout did not and it also was not reported to keep up the moral of the troops. It was contracted by a soldier at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He and several thousand troops were deployed overseas and the flu spread as well as spreading here in the states. So that's the story we all have been taught here. So it was always wondered why it was called the Spanish flu. We supposed because it was because Spain was the first to report it, even though it was already in the USA and other counties, and the ruler of Spain contracted it. Funny how history varies with different countries. Not saying you are wrong. It just makes one wonder what the true facts are all through history.🤔😕

There is a programme on TV here that my husband loves but I find boring 🙄 all about correcting the history we have been taught, a lot of which arose from propaganda and ‘fake news’ eg the Marie Antoinette story ‘Let them eat cake’.

Sometimes I wonder how much history I was taught in school was correct. 🤔

Is this post to do with Afib?

belindalore in reply to 10gingercats

I believe so, if one is getting any form of treatment for the covid virus that might affect Afib.

Certainly is, because I always get AF when I have a virus 🙁

There's surely no way your borders should have been opened now - just not the right time with covid. The world has gone mad! I think we all need to stay in the areas where we live right now. Here, we are not allowed to travel other than to get shopping, or other urgent needs. We can go out for exercise for one hour a day and are asked not to travel more than 2 miles by car to do that.

Fortunately I live near the coast, so have lots of lovely walks right from my house. I feel for those who don't though. Can't be easy.

It's good that new drugs to treat coronavirus are being discovered all the time now. We in the UK have progressed greatly in treating covid more effectively now.

Actually our borders have never been closed. But Trump had it managed better. But many sneak in. Many places along the border for them to do that. Biden reversed the immigration plan Trump had in place. Now the illegals are coming more and more. It's getting out of hand again.

I wish the USA was as cautious as you all. Some seem to think here once they get a dose of the vaccine it's back to normal. I don't know what they are thinking. Nice you live by the coast. That would be so nice and relaxing.Yes it seems like most countries have learned how to better treat the virus. Much better outcomes for many in the hospitals. I was happy to see research is continuing to find other treatments. Can't come soon enough.

I understand you had been having gall bladder problems? Whatever it was hope you are doing well. ☺ Take care.

Favipiravir is an oral antiviral approved for the treatment of influenza in Japan. It selectively inhibits RNA polymerase, which is necessary for viral replication. Japan has commenced with a phase 3 clinical trial. In the United States, a phase 2 trial will enroll approximately 50 patients with COVID-19, in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In India, a phase 3 trial combining 2 antiviral agents, favipiravir and umifenovir, started in May 2020. [32, 33]

Good to see yet another study being done to find more treatments for the virus. Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone could find just one thing that would take care of all viruses? Maybe in the far future. 😔

" My hopes are not high. Even with the vaccines. They don't stop transmission. " How do you know?

belindalore profile image
belindalore in reply to Peteh55

That's what has been reported where I live. That's one reason we've been told to keep following the guidelines even after getting the vaccine. There's still much not known about the vaccines.

Peteh55 profile image

Exactly. No-one knows for sure yet what effect vaccines will have on transmission. A UK govt scientist on TV at this very moment is saying preliminary data from Israel is pointing towards a 60% reduction in transmissibility from those who've been vaccinated but this may vary between vaccines and is early data. He has been asked a question and has said there are multiple studies, data will come with time but effective vaccines "cannot fail to have some effect on transmissibility". "You don't have vaccines this effective without some effect on transmissibility". So all the indications are that vaccines WILL reduce transmissibility but we don't yet have the data to understand by how much, or which vaccines will reduce transmissibility the most.

I go by what I hear. I'm in the USA. I see varying accounts from different countries. No one seems to agree on everything. It's frustrating. So I'll agree with you when you say no one knows what effect the vaccines will have on transmission. In fact there is so much contradiction on things over here I don't know what to believe. Drs and the experts tell us one thing and the next day it's the opposite. And the news media just makes it worse..... I suppose as with most things time will tell. Anyway. I hope you are doing well and staying well during all this.🙏

I agree. Misinformation and confusion reign but I do think the UK scientist speaking today was focused on data and experience. I guess he may be right he may be wrong, only time will tell. Sadly the vaccine was a too late for our family - my wife and I both caught covid over Christmas - we recovered OK but my elderly mother in law passed away on 24th January. She had been due to receive the vaccine on 16th January. We'd taken no risks, not even been to a supermarket for 9 months. This virus is evil and the new variant is very contagious. I was more sick than my wife and had the paramedics out on one occasion - it didn't spark an episode of AFIB but did with my mother in law. I mention this simply because until you are vaccinated and possibly afterwards please take every precaution to protect yourself. Act like you or anyone you meet has the virus for the next few months until the situation is clearer. All the best.

Oh, Pete, so sorry you and your wife caught it. And saddened about your mother in law. Yes it is an evil thing. Even more and more the more it mutates.. I know we have to rely on the scientists and hope they can guide us. It is frustrating with all the variance of information. But that will happen as we all live in different countries. I am doing my best to protect myself. Now wearing two masks. I take sanitizer with me. I have to go out to shop. I don't have any choice. I wince when I see people not wearing masks or being careful. I stay as far away as I can. And I pray. Don't know what else to do. And I find great comfort being on this forum. To give support and comfort and to also receive means a lot to me. Thank you. I wish you and your loved ones the best also.
