I have been prescribed 1.5 bisoprolol for palpitations but I am not sure if I really want to take them. Any thoughts please.

Thanks

Not a particularly helpful answer from me but here goes.

If you have been prescribed bisoprolol you should take it. Taking any medicine is based on an expert view ( the doctor) who knows your specific situation. For a lot of folk bisoprolol is a very effective an very proven remedy, some have problems with it but I understand most do not,

If you get side effects and or no improvement then speak with your doctor, but don’t prejudge the outcome ,

follow your prescription advice and hopefully it will work perfectly for you

I don’t subscribe to the infallibility of medics theory and particularly GPS . I was prescribed bisoprolol four months ago after a single incident of AF triggered by an electrolyte imbalance . It was a horrible drug for me . Breathless exhausted. Went to see another cardio who said I shouldn’t have been on it after one episode and told me to withdraw from it. Had horrible side effects including awful anxiety. Was changed to atenolol which doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier and on the last lap of withdrawing from that, been much better experience than withdrawing from bisoprolol . Personally if your only problem is anxiety I would try other ways of addressing it before taking any drugs . speaking from hard experience If there’s another medical reason that’s a different situation. I am not medically qualified this is just a personal view . Other people tolerate bisoprolol really well I don’t think it would be my beta blocker of choice for someone with anxiety. One that doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier might be better . These drugs aren’t “ chewing gum” as the cardiologist who put me on them described them. Good luck and sorry about your anxiety

Bisoprolol didn’t suit me at all and made my palpitations even worse. Stayed on it for 3 months then advised by hospital to reduce and stop. Because of withdrawal symptoms it took me 8 months to wean off and now over three months I am still suffering rebound palpitation which are much worse and more prolonged than they were originally Check bisoprolol buddies on the internet to read some of their experiences.

If you have all the test on your heart and they are fine the palpitations are not dangerous unless you have chest pain, breathlessness or fainting.

It suits many people but they have heart conditions and not just palpitations

Agreed. Bisoprolol gave me a whole host of palpitations I didn’t have before I started taking it

Bisoprolol helps some people but many experience side effects. Unfortunately, until you take it, you will not know whether or not it will help or hinder you. I

Bisoprolol will not stop your palpitations but what it will do is keep your heart rate under control. If you regularly have a high heart rate, it is the first drug doctors tend to try. If you haven’t got high heart rate or high BP I personally would question the doctor as to why it was prescribed.

It was not a drug for me.

I've been taking 2.5 Bisoprolol for nearly a year and it's worked very well, no side effects other than being a bit tired somedays but it's not a problem. I was also prescribed it some years ago but then taken off it, no withdrawal issues when I stopped taking it.

Kazzy - I just read your profile - you don’t give any information as to the diagnosis of your Palpitations? Have you been diagnosed with AF? I note that you have treatment for thyroid which often leads to various arrythmias but it is important to also be informed on the different types of arrythmias and their treatments. Have you seen a cardiologist?

Palpitations is a word that just describes the sensations we feel in our chest when our hearts go wonky.

I would be very careful about taking Bisoprolol without a lot more knowledge and input from a cardiologist.

Hi thanks for your reply, I suffer terribly from throat palpations, they are quite fierce, no rhyme or reason for them they just come and go. I have an underactive thyroid which I take 100mg thyroxine daily, and take Paroxatine for my anxiety, I have had a heart scan and have been informed my heart is in perfect health nothing wrong with it at all. I sometime think my palpitations are all to do with my anxiety.

They may have prescribed Bisoprolol to reduce your anxiety as it is a Beta Blocker, meaning it dampens down Adrenaline which is a stress hormone released when you worry but also connected to the thyroid.

I suspect the replies you received above relate more to those who take Bisoprolol for reducing heart rate and BP. The palpitations we talk about are all from the heart, not the throat. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply, yes I expect you are correct all my palpitations are in the throat and it is truly awful some days, so maybe I will give the tablets a try and see if they work for me.
