Asymptomatic AFIB - What's Next

I've had asymptomatic AFIB for at least 15 years. I've had a non-defibrating pacemaker that long for another issue. I transmit my pacemaker data by telephone (using a Medtronic device) every 90 days, and have an in-person check twice annually. My in-person check last week revealed that I am in AFIB 40% of the time. I've been scheduled for 2 cardioversions in the recent past. They could not be completed because I was not in AFIB at the time. I asked the doc if there is any danger in leaving everything alone (except for the check-ups), and his answer seemed inconclusive to me. Any advice?

Hi Dixi.

It sounds like you convert to sinus on your own - hence if you are in normal rhythm a CV would be pointless.

I assume you are on an anticoagulant ? This to me sounds the best option for you as things stand. I'm sure you are though - maybe it's worth talking to your cardio about ablation ?

Thanks, Paul. I have been on an oral blood thinner for 7-8 years. Presently it is 2.5mg Eliquis twice daily. When I became 80, I was told to cut my 5mg regimen in half.

Since you are asymptomatic then provided that you are anticoagulated and your rate is well controlled I would do nothing. Any and all treatment for AF is mainly for quality of life.

Thanks, BobD. I am on an anti coagulant.
