High BNP and heart failure

Been having swollen ankles for ages with only 'superficial 'advice from doc/GP.After a strong letter to him and a whole range of bloods one of the bloods came up with a very high BNP result. To cut a long story short. I have no other symptoms of heart failure eg walk very well, climb stairs, not breathless at all etc. Also last echo and general heart checkup .... 2years ago.. was very good even allowing for the Afib...permanent.Anyone else had this anomaly ?I have yet to be in touch with GP but thought i would ask here as it doen;t sound right.

I suggest you look up heart failure on the BHF website or ask your question on their forum. My understanding is that there are two types of HF and one causes swelling of legs and abdomen and general tiredness and the other causes breathlessness etc. If you have both you are in trouble! Best wishes, please update 💜

Thanks for your support.I have swollen legs that come and go(normally have lovely ankles(!) with pain and night cramps no abdomen swelling and no shortness of breath. However, got into a panic when i read the test results and need to get to the bottom it it.I will go onto the B.H.F website.

BNP can be raised for other reasons, mine is high but I don't have hf.

I had a whole range of blood tests recently due to the dratted swollen ankles and this came up. I have not been diagnosed with Heart failure but saw that very high BNP is a a strong indicator and panicked.Doc. intending to refer me to gerantologists,,,G. help me! But I may refer myself to a cardio. privately if things do not go along quickly and I get too anxiious about it.

My Cardio isn't remotely interested in the high BNP as I have no other signs of hf, have to say none of my other Consultants are bothered either, makes you wonder why we bother to have these tests done !

Thank you....all very helpful and reassuring. I did not ask for the test .Never had it before to my knowledge.Since i am pretty still 'get up and go at 82' I was quite shocked at this new revelation.
