Electrolytes

I've read something on here or may be another forum about drinking an electrolyte drink for Afib. It makes sense because I, and I'm sure others, suffer from increased urination from metoprolol. And increased urination can deplenish the body of our needed electrolytes. I've also read that metoprolol can cause too much potassium to build up in the blood. Maybe not with the increased urination? Maybe that happens to those who don't suffer from the increased urination. I live in the US and someone mentioned how the Drs just prescribe you pills and send you on your way. So true. They don't care to take the time to consider what happens to your body on these medicines. Know nothing about nutrition and how important it is. My cardio Dr wants me to do ablation. Right off the bat. Right away I saw someone who has money in mind. Anyway that's another subject. Really want to know anyone's take on using electrolyte drinks and how you feel using them. I read about a couple people who swear by them. One lady used low sodium V8 juice with good luck. There's Gatorade and Powerade and I'm sure others. Any info is appreciated. Everyone stay safe no matter where you are in these trying times.

I tend to stick to natural drinks - fresh coconut water is excellent and helps to hydrate.

I always try to keep some in the fridge but you need to be aware and read the labels for ingredients very carefully as a lot of drinks will have sugar or sweetners both of which will be inflammatory. Even some drinks labelled ‘Coconut’ will have been tampered with.

It’s worth bearing in mind that fresh, dechlorinated water with a little salt and minuscule amount of sugar or glucose such as D-Ribose will work just as well and a LOT cheaper. Certainly works if you are out and about for constant replenishment.

Thanks. Didn't see your post. But you can read my reply to Bob D below. A lot to ponder trying to be well.

Most such drinks are a waste of money. We had a recent TV program about such matters and plain water plus some salt and a small amaount of sugar are just as affective.

To be honest the increased urination is the AF not the drugs as the distressed heart releases an enzyme which causes the body to get rid of salt.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I have to agree with you about the manufactured drinks. Before I saw your reply I found a site that said a couple tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt in an 8 oz. glass of water is a good drink. So I may try that. Maybe add the pinch of sugar😌. And I do remember reading now that you mentioned that the heart does release the enzyme that gets rid of salt.

I get occasional late afternoon and nights when I find myself urinating a lot. I also have found I am taking more salt (hi quality unprocessed) with my food than I ever did before AF.

I use Science in sport hydro tablets just pop one in a glass of water. There is no sugar or caffeine etc

Really works and helps with leg cramps.

Great if you workout as well and sweat a lot as dehydration can trigger AF

I’m in AF as we speak went into it when asleep on Friday night the excess urination at first was the worst I’ve had the SIS Tablets stopped the leg spasms and cramps.

Even went for a 3 mile walk yesterday. You can get the tabs from Amazon and I’ve seen them occasionally in Lidl hope this helps

I use hi Five zero capsules every day plus a homemade hydration drink. The capsules are for athletes, and I like to pretend I'm one of those, I get them from Wiggle.com.

Dehydration has set off both my recent Afib episodes, I think.

You can make your own hydration drink with water, bit of salt and bit of sugar and then add a flavouring if you want. Plenty of recipes online.

Cheap and no added added nasties. In between I drink tea plus plain water. I probably have 2litres of drink plus 4 giant mugs if weak tea per day. No coffee and no alcohol at the moment ( 10 weeks post ablation)

I use the same Hi5 zero tabs. I read about dehydration and also the link with magnesium deficiency that was a potential trigger for AF.

I take them certainly after most exercise sessions and also if the weather has been hot and I feel that I haven’t drank enough during the day

I can’t say that they stop / prevent AF, but I will keep taking them for piece of mind along with a regular dose of magnesium taurate.

I use Bio Steel. It is available in Canada. I find it helps to keep me hydrated. My cardiologist said to remember to stay hydrated. I add Bio steel to my water bottle and sip throughout the day. I am sure any electrolyte product would work. I find it hard to drink just plain water so adding Bio Steel powder taste great and makes drinking water easier.
