Why do these things always happen late at night ? Sitting watching news , HR suddenly up over 150 bpm........ Have not been troubled badly by AFib for quite a while , the irony is my last visit to Cardiologist at Royal Brompton was the dayday before lockdown , March 16, was to have a 7 day monitor fitted ,to investigate low HR ......
I’m trying to stay very calm ,(which I’m quite good at in Emergencies due my old job training) but it has not felt like this before , there’s a slight feeling of pressure around the neck , rising up my throat .... My usual Valsalva manoeuvre has not helped ..... So just popped 50 mg Flecaineide.... 1st time that I had to use it since planned ablation cancelled during EP studies 18 months ago when they discovered AF . Think hot weather may be partly to blame , I have been so tired last few weeks.......
Any advice anyone ? ....Idea .how long before the Flecaineide might kick in ? Bit too late at night to be emailing ECG over to Cardiologist ...
Living deep in countryside , looking after my beloved who’s 84 ..... .

i have been advised to take 200 dose of flecanide when it happens to me and it usually goes back to normal within 2 or 3 hours. i am not on flecanide all the time i use it as a PIP (PILL IN THE POCKET) when i need it this works for me I think maybe a dose of 50 is not enough to stop an attack. I have had 2 ablations and also have atrial flutter as well as AF. hope this may help.
How are you this morning Alessa, has your heart calmed?
Sometimes I think we forget to breathe deep enough and that can trigger an AF attack. Not drinking enough fluids is also a trigger in this hot weather. This morning fairly soon after getting out of bed I drank a glass of water and then a little later two half glasses. Not saying I'm perfect, this is the first morning I've thought to do that, but it does feel like it's going to be an exceptionally hot day.
Morning Jeannie !Think that you are right about the weather today ......
I’m still here, mercifully Flecaineide did the trick ( this time my usual Valsalva manoeuvre did not work) 50 mg of Flecaineide at onset is my prescribed dose , but given no results yet from 7 day heart monitor before lockdown,I guess I need to email Cardiologist ?! Fell asleep about 3am, HR steadied during the night , down to 59 & what feels like NSR.... Thanks be !
I always have a glass of water by my bed& drink whenever I wake in the night ( think I sleep with mouth open due nasal congestion’s) My mouth is always dry.
Maybe a combination of heat, & de hydration, my body really struggles with fluid balance these days & good old stress, I’m carer to my 84 yr old ex Himalayan climber Para , he’s also a Cardiac patient (we almost get buy 1 , get one free with our long term Cardiologist !) ....... I couldn’t an on line shop & had to go out to shop last night ....Big mistake to come back & watch the News etc .....
That apart, we’ve been lucky during lockdown , as lots time in garden & walking the dogs . I do SO miss my swimming though, that helped my body so much !
I emailed copy of ECG to our lovely Cardiologist ( was a bit unsure about sending at that time , but hoped he might see it in th morning ...... & we have known each other over22 yrs)
Of course I will ! I know how lucky I am ,( I’m still able to keep my insurance going , which helps ) I try never to abuse the privilege of communication though , but he knows I have a fair lot of complexity , looking after beloved ‘s heart etc & I did a job for 36 yrs that put my heart under a lot of strain.....
Phew ! Lucky me , as we managed arrange a phone consultation, which has resulted in me now being on higher daily dose of Flecaineide , instead of as a PIP.......All I can say , is thank heavens for being to able to email ECG to the Cardiologist that I have known for so many years . Within 2 hours after taking 100mg Flecaineide I felt SO much better....... Follow up stuff in 2 weeks ..... and breathe . Interestingly, I seem to have lose an amount of stored fluid too .......
Over 24 hr period , I went from HR of 178..... then next morning a range of 37-138.... to a calm stable rhythm after Managed dose if Flecaineide .... Luckily, it seems to work for me , fingers crossed 🤞
That's good that you've now been advised what to do and are feeling so much better. Long may that last now. Are you taking a beta blocker alongside your Flecainide?
