I do not take either of your medications; however, I have experienced awful heartburn too and for the longest time, I blamed my medications starting with aspirin and then to Xarelto and Metropolol. Sometime this past September it became really unbearable and decided to alter my eating habits. I stopped eating all white foods like potatoes, rice, flour products etc. No more butter, just Olive Oil. Finish eating by 7 pm and absolutely no snacks before bedtime. Eat when I'm hungry. No binge eating. And drink 35 ounces of spring water - not purified water, every day. No sodas and no tea. And, a real change was to combine evening medications right after dinner. Within a week, my heartburn was gone and it has remained gone.

Have the docs looked in to your stomach and esophagus? If not, you need to tell your doc how bad it is. Sounds like it is no longer simple heartburn. If you drink alcohol, need to stop. You might have bad gastritis and/ or esophagitis which can lead into bleeding. Get some medical attention soon if you havent yet

That's a good recommendation from Dawsonmackay .

I gave up fatty foods, vinegar and yogurt and that cured my stomach soreness. Magnesium tablets can make it sore too. I also take my Warfarin tablets mid breakfast as that also aggravated it. I think some of us just have sensitive stomachs.

Once healed, I found I could occasionally have those foods with no effect. Just get that stomach better first.

Good luck.

As has been explained elsewhere ppis have a reputation of exacerbating reflux if taken long term. The mechanics are that the part digested food in the stomach needs an acid environement for the lower sphincter to open and pass stuff down to the gut. Take this away and food remains in the stomach and is actually more likely to back up. Not sure how one can escape this merry go round but agree that you need to see your doctor urgently for endoscopy and any other investigation needed. Once you have been sorted out never take these drugs for more than two weeks.

My wife had a Nissen fundoplication ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisse...

for just the same issue.

If left untreated its a pre cursor to stomach cancer , this prevents reflux and stops acid entering your esophagus.

She still has to take omeprazole for the rest of her life.

She has found since being on nexium ( nine years since the Nissen Fundoplication ) that the generic replacements are not satisfactory it has to be the Swedish made nexium.

Her script says no generic substitution .

That maybe your problem also sanding , although its no different in cost to us the price of Nexium is a lot higher to the Health Service.

I also had Nissen Fundoplication sleeksheep back in 2012 for that same reason, It is not an operation to take lightly. I still have to take Esomeprazole (nexium) daily.

Heartburn means stomach juices are where they shouldn’t be - in the oesophagus. The acid in these juices will have been cut down by the PPI drug, but there can still be enzymes like pepsin along with other digestive juices that can burn the delicate membranes even as high as the sinuses above the nose.

You might even have a hiatus hernia as well as what is called an incompetent lower oesophageal sphincter.

Back to the doctor’s!

This sounds like you have been treating the symptoms of your gastric problems rather than looking at the fundamental causes.

I think you need to see an NHS dietician to address any lifestyle/diet issues you have which are perpetuating this condition.

My wife used to suffer nocturnal acid attacks but these have now stopped since rebalancing her digestion and gut microbiome.

She started making her own Kefir, cutting out inflammatory foods (check internet for lists), not eating late and just the occasional single glass of red wine with food.

Apart from fixing her acid she lost quite a lot of weight and has much more energy.

Good luck

I have reflux disease and hiatus hernia. I've been on Ppis for 3 years. Last year an idiot locum GP told me to stop taking the Ppis which led to rebound acid production, causing severe reflux that triggered AF and resulted in me being hospitalised for 6 days. I was in very symptomatic persistent AF for 6 weeks until cardioverted. Hospital put me back on Ppis but my digestive system is still not fully recovered. I came across the acid watcher diet by Dr Jonathan Aviv, which has helped enormously. You should see your GP urgently but smaller meals and avoiding trigger foods will help. The oesophagus runs down the back of the heart, and if it is distressed it can upset the heart, which is what happened to me. I hope you get this sorted out soon.

I too have had frequent heart burn and found eating non fatty foods, no processed foods, and no citrus or tomatoes ( fire roasted tomatoes only as not acidy) and no more acid reflux.

Keep a strict diet, bread, cheese, no milk, lessen meat only, while taking nexium regularly and dont drink more than a glass of water(important)! after a week youll see that your problems are no more.

I take Nexium, not the swedish brand but a cheap brand, and I have had the same heart burn problems as you for the past 10 years, until I changed my diet! It was so simple a solutions but it has functioned after a week of change of diet habit. eating less but much more costly foods and dont forget to eat everyday meat and eggs! I discovered that I was eating garbage food and that was the problem! Now Im heart burn free and gerd free, taking 20 mg of Nexium, from 80 I was taking before.
