Help understanding

I love this site it’s been so helpful to me, but I am puzzled by the abbreviations that are used, I know AF is for atrial fibrillation, but the others leave me wondering.

Also what’s the difference between AF and flutters.

Some solutions would be great , give me more understanding of what others are inputting.

Hope you can help you knowledgeable people.

You will find a list under pinned posts to the right of your screen. In case it is not listed. AF is an irregular irregular heart beat whilst flutter is fast and regular. Both easily distinguished on ECG

That is not the list I meant. the AFA list is at the bottom of that list of pinned posts.

“Oldies” on this forum are long term Afibbers, or long term forum users.

“Newbies” are recently diagnosed, awaiting diagnosis or joined the forum recently.

Thank you john 6 I think you have summed it up entirely, we must not assume that others understand your abbreviations

I tend to be guilty of abbrevating things - my bad. I hope it's not because I'm to lazy to type the word in full. Maybe it is - who knows.

It is what it is...an online forum to discuss a-fib. The best advice is to read answers and then discuss points raised with your doctor - then you can decide if you wish to act on them IMHO ;-)

Thank you, glad I am not the only one not understanding the abbreviations.

It is true and sometimes I do not have a clue what a poster is talking about.

Thank you for your response, I thought I was the only one not having all the knowledge

I agree that abbreviations really break up the message to the point where they are not worth the time to read.

It doesn't help that PAF can mean one of three different types of afib, but who wants to spell out long standing persistent when permanent formerly meant the same thing. I do think that anyone on sotalol or tikosyn should know what LQTS stands for.

Hatten28 profile image
Hatten28 in reply to indy64

Thanks but what does?LQTS mean, and yes I take sotalol, for the last twenty years plus at least, be interested to know what the relationship between LQTS and Sotalol is?

CDreamer profile image

LQTS = Long QTS syndrome. QTS are points on an ECG, not abbreviations. If you don’t know what something is - research it or ask. Most posters are more than happy to help.

PAF means Paroxysmal AF. All definitions are on the information on the AFA site - links on the Pinned Posts.

The relationship between Sotolol & LQTS is that like any rhythm drug, Sotolol has the potential to cause as well as help rhythm irregularities & LQTS is potentially a serious complication of taking such a powerful drug.

A quick and easy way of checking anything on the web that you're not sure of is to highlight the word or acronym (hold down left mouse button and swipe across word or phrase) then right click and go to 'Search Google for ***', a new tab should open up with the info, not foolproof but mostly it works ok.

Hope this helps.

Thank you but how to do it on an I pad, I am not very savvy about computers

tunybgur profile image

See what you mean, I've also got an Ipad but find it so slow and restrictive compared to a PC that I rarely use it.

Hatten28 profile image
Hatten28 in reply to tunybgur

I don’t find my I pad slow at all but a bit restrictive in certain instances, I also have a computer which I don’t use very often, lucky I have a computer savvy son, he helps me when I get stuck. Trouble is I forget what he tells me the minute he has gone.

Thank you for your input

Highlight the word, (long press), options appear to "copy" "share" "web search" etc. Touch "web search" to open page/new tab with info.

Long QT Interval Syndrome. Without proper loading dose determination in a hospital, anti-arrhythmic drugs can cause a a long QT interval, which in some cases can cause sudden death.

That sounds scary, but thank you for responding

I am too lazy to start up my laptop so do everything on my cellphone but it has nothing on the RHS that leads to all the abbreviations.

I presume LQTS is Long QT Syndrome but I have no idea what it has to do with Sotalol. Perhaps the QT interval increases with Sotalol and can cause Ventricular Fibrillation if longer than 500 ms.

I have taken sotalol for over 20 years, until recently had no bad problems until recently . In January I had three severe episodes of AFwhich severely scared me also have a pacemaker at last being referred to a cardiologist but am waiting for echocardiogram before I can see a specialist.

Have not seen anyone apart from pacemaker checks in all the 20 years.

I get very breathless now, I am hoping for some good news.
