Endoscopy
Hi. I had endoscopy and colonoscopy recently to investigate gastric problems. I came off anticoagulant before the procedure back on them now. No problem with AF or bleeding- I think the stress and worries about what they might find (fortunately nothing that couldn’t be fixed as it turned out) was more likely to trigger an AF episode than anything to do with the procedure itself. I opted for sedation mainly because I feared I would panic when the tube went in but I probably wouldn’t bother with it again now I know there was no pain or breathing problems!!

I had an endoscopy in February. I was in AF for the entire time but had a wonderful anaesthetist who looked after me. My gastroenterologist and EP are good friends so they’d had a chat about me. I had numerous biopsies taken but there were no dramas. I had to stop my anticoagulant 24 hours before (it’s usually 48 hours but as I’d previously had a clot in my heart they agreed to alter the protocol).
Had an endoscopy last year and didn't need to stop warafin even. Zero issues.
Thank you. Needed the reassurance
Had endoscopy last October but because they didn't stop the Warfarin 48 hours before they couldn't take a biopsy.
I've had two colonoscopies this year, about ten days apart. I opted for no sedation but had Entonox to hand if needed. It wasn't.
The first colonoscopy was diagnostic so I didn't need to come off warfarin. It found 4 polyps, one of which was close to the junction with the small intestine. Ten days later, after I had come off warfarin, I had a second colonoscopy to have the polyps removed. All went well. I am due for follow up colonoscopies in 3 years time.
Had a colonoscopy last year. I decided to have no sedation as there was a risk that this could trigger AF. Was not as painful as I expected and bonus was I could get dressed and drive home, unlike the sedated zombies that had to wait for hours to be descharged .
I doubt that I would have an endoscopy without sedation though
Thank you
Hi, I can understand your concerns, but would advise you not to worry. You have more likelihood of going into AF by stressing yourself than any thing else. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy in March. I advised my cardiologist and he just asked me to withdraw my anticog 48 hours prior to the procedure and he wrote a letter to the gastroenterologist. I was in Af at the time of the procedure and that did not phase my anaesthetist. He had administered GA's to many people in AF with no detrimental effect. The most important thing you should do from now on is switch off that worry button in your brain! Good luck.
I had endoscopy prior to ablation, no sedation and managed okay. Slight bleeding for about 2 weeks, nothing I was concerned about, really minor.
Thank you for this
Hi, I have had the dubious pleasure of looking up my own bum on two occasions, thanks to the idiosyncrasies of the INR system. The first colonoscopy identified some polyps which needed excising. The surgeon decided not to carry out the procedure because my INR was just over 2.0. I returned a few days later with an INR of 1.9 and had them removed. Coming off warfarin for 48 hours before the colonoscopy was not, in my case, sufficient time for my INR to drop to an acceptable levels.
I had an endoscopy a few months ago and had no problems.
Hi, I had to have a TOE - trans-oesophageal-endoscopy before cardio version to check for clots.
It was not the most pleasant procedure, but no bad side effects or bleeding etc. I was in Afib when carried out, so would think that it wouldn't encourage an attack. X
You guys did prep twice in a 3 to 4 day turnaround? Nope, not happening.
