...not those kind of passions ;)

I was wondering, we have such a mass of people here of different ages areas and backgrounds.. what people's passions are?

Something you love to do, something that chills you out or you absolutely love to do. Even if you can't do it as much as you used to, you miss it, or hope to get back to it at some stage.

For me its Cricket. I used to play up until I was 17 and I got a knee injury from it, despite my best efforts I couldn't get back into it in my mid 20s due to the instablitiy of the knee joint and the reaction to regular playing time.

I did coach it informally for a while when my ex-stepkids got into it & I was a dad helper. Nowadays I have to stick to watching it, reading about it and playing it on the Playstation(!) I really do miss "turning my arm over" and still have all the gear.

The secondary passion is being outdoors. Walking, photography or just fresh air and nice views. Always been happier when I'm out and about (provided it's not too peoply) because I'm a bit of an introvert and I quite enjoy my own company - I don't get much of it these days!

Love to hear what inflames your senses, takes you away from the beast of AF and the clouds it can bring, something you can discuss until the cows come home. I wonder if people are passionate about the same things?

Great post, looking forward to reading the replies!

Like Flapjack we are Motorhomers. Had a yacht for 40 years, but decided to come ashore and travel further afield.

I am still motorhomer in my heart but husband doesn't want to drive it any more and I can't because of dizzy spells I just dream - lots of happy memories though.

in reply to Buffafly

Today are new one arrived in U.K. Husband has early stages glaucoma so we have got rid of the large van which required a C1 licence and have bought a smaller model that can be driven on a car licence. With 9 automatic gears I won’t be attempting to drive her!!

Yep, just back from a 4 week trek to Croatia....no motorways or tolls....fanbloomintastic!!

Your love of cricket shines through your post! We share loving being out in the country..or seaside. My passions are gardening, have an allotment too, where I grow lots of our own veg. I share it with our eldest son,and my brother has one too! My dad was chairman of the committee for years and was always down there. We kept his shed and hi s tools...

I'm also passionate about good food, and as part of my last job taught basic cooling to parents. I've just started my independent classes called Cookwell..for a bit of income and interest now I'm a) retired early and b) a lot better af wise.Really enjoying it! Will be interested to read replies,!!

I'm growing our own potatoes this year... when is the best time to pick? The stems are already quite tall. Planted 18th May.

BobD profile image
BobDVolunteer in reply to jedimasterlincoln

Keep building soil up around the stems or you won't get any. Best way for a small garden is an old oil drum. Start with a few inches of soil with your seed pots and add soil as the stems grow till you run out of space. Can also do with a stack of old tyres.

jedimasterlincoln profile image

Brilliant thanks. I'm going to need a bigger pot and a bit more soil I think!

Used to be a great walker, leader for Ramblers Association, hill walking in Lakes ski ing in winter, Italy I loved. Still do love the place, the people, culture etc. Arthritis stopped that game.

Good music, anything from Jazz to Classics via pop but not rap.

Good food and wine but AF got in the way.

57 years in motorsport says it all really. Still relax building race engines and helping my two boys with their competition cars (rallying and drift) and lots of historic race cars for which I do engines. Never enjoy testing these on the dyno. Standing next to one of your creations revving its nuts off at 8000 +rpm has been described at a 2 valium job.

Enough?

Music is my passion ....

Genesis (both eras, Gabriel and Collins)....Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound are 2 masterpieces....

10cc - again both eras, Godley and Creme and without....

I love nearly all types of music, except country.

A new ish band I like are Foals. Very exciting to watch.

I like gigs..... recently saw Foals. I’ve seen Mumford & Sons this year and Mike & The Mechanics.... also Snow Patrol.

There’s not many bands I haven’t seen over the years. I went to Live Aid, Live8 and Live Earth, Mandela Day and done Glastonbury twice.

However I have not seen the original Genesis.... 😩😩😩

I’ve seen them apart but not the whole original lineup....

I like films and I like shopping.... shopping is probably my major passion!!

I love cats 🐈 and currently have a gorgeous rescue boy from Battersea called Pepe.

I saw the original Genesis at Wembly Stadium. 🤗 I'd forgotten how good it was till recently my son who was with me at the concert managed to email me a recording. Made me tingle and feel brighter remembering good times. I also saw ELO with my other son at Wembly and that too was a night to remember. I so miss live music. I need to start listening but will need better head phones. Not my husband's taste!

Have had a rescue dog for last 7 years who had a bad start. He still isn't easy and I have a big commitment to finding out the best way as his guardian to optimise his care. Have just started on another on line course to further my aims. Think locally they see me as the mad dog woman!!

I also get immense pleasure from my grandchildren even though don't see them as often as I'd like. Very true that they are a reward for not killing your children!!

I have a passion for Northern Soul & Tamla Motown music. Since having the AF devil inflicted on me it has quite literally saved my sanity at times. What a sad place this world would be without the joy of music to soothe the mind & soul 👌

Hi TamlaMotown, it's been a while! You know we share a love of Motown. 😊 Growing up in Detroit, it was the music we learned in school, complete with the dances, etc. Really happy to see that the Broadway show about the Temptations has done so well.

Feeling better these days, Tamla, hope you are well!

Textiles - just love messing around with fabric or any crafty things really.

Gardening, but severely limited at the moment because of arthritis and sciatica - had a depressing consult yesterday with lovely doc who suggested I kit myself out with gadgets from the Arthritis UK website and I just smiled sweetly, ungracious to say I already have the gadgets but they don't help you dig! My favourite outing is visiting someone else's garden.....

Teaching - I still teach reading voluntarily and lead children's activities in church sometimes but Messy Church (craft based service) is the best!

My escape was " mucking out " the horses, sadly we no long have them . The horses , goats , ducks and chooks have all crossed the " rainbow bridge " so now left with five cats and at the moment one labrador . My passion ( after nursing ) was rehabilitating rescue dogs , age now demands something less taxing so I bake , mainly bread , sourdough in particular . Loads of cakes which end up stashed in the freezer till I find someone to eat them lol . Luckily we also do lots of walking !!!!!

It has to be cycling......doing it, watching it! So.........

The little bit I can still do.......then possibly an electric bike!

The Tour de France......don't care about the weather, after not going near the TV for over 2 months, I will be in front of it for the next 3 weeks.......allez, allez!!

I also love walking by the sea, it's 9 minutes walk away.

Would love to explore in a Motorhome, but sadly we can't afford one!

1st stage was good.......shame Cav is not racing (he must be gutted)...not surprised though.

It's fun to read about everyone's passions. Thanks for the topic, jedimasterlincoln!

For me, walking in the woods is big...have to go up to the big regional park just up the street every day to get my fix of nature. There's a pond with a very long log on which up to 18 turtles line up to sun themselves on sunny days. They are so cute! All facing in the same direction.

Art! Drawing, visiting museums, etc.

My kitty, the "real" Nella, keeps me entertained.

I love Broadway musicals. My latest Broadway passion is "Hamilton." It came to my area 2 years ago, when I first saw it, and has been back for a few months now. I used the music to help my students improve their English and we had a great time. Saw it in June and will return next week. Somehow I got lucky and got an email with a special deal on tickets. Maybe they know I'm obsessed. The show brings me so much joy; I know it's also helping my heart.

in reply to

You need to post a pic of all those turtles!

Im 66 and have been in love with horses ever since I was a young girl. Got my first horse 41 yr ago when I married a country boy who loved and had a horse. Our family vacations when our sons were old enough consisted of trail riding and camping. Now at 66, on anticoagulation, have arthritic knees... my horsing around consists of saddling up and riding around home for maybe an hour. My horse Brumby is calm and patient, I think he understands he has to be gentle with his cargo, lol. Im also passionate about our dogs. Im blessed to have a husband who shares the same loves. It does make me sad to see we are aging and cannot do all we used to. But it makes me feel good to walk out the front door and holler for Brumby and he usually comes running to me. Im pretty sure he is never sad about not wearing a saddle, lol.

This is a great idea Jedi, it was fun reading the responses

G'day O Wise Jedi Master,

For me, three things.

Although born in Britain my loyalties and love lie with and in a far country. Australia and its awesome outback, then steam engines/railways, particularly Britain's heritage railway system and cricket (watching only - and supporting Australia ..... now where is me sandpiper? ).

May the force be with you.

John

jedimasterlincoln profile image
jedimasterlincoln in reply to

Went to heritage rail a few weeks ago, there's a fair few steam events on locally over the summer. Primarily because the "beeching axe" post war got rid of a lot of unprofitable branch lines and various organisations have kept them decent enough to be re-opened or have a mainline connection! There's nothing like the sights and smells of steam!

Good luck in the Ashes, one of the Marsh brothers has broken his arm so you might be in with a shout now ;)

in reply to jedimasterlincoln

Thank you for that. Yep, nothing like the sound and smell of steam - was lucky enough to see Tornado and Flying Scotsman last year when they were down here in Penzance.

Meanwhile we have an infant heritage railway nearby at Helston, and a more developed one at Bodmin. Great.

We'll see about the Ashes , am not that confident that Oz have what it takes, quite a different game to the world Cup series.

Regards

The mountains here are my passion and have been since I read Heidi as a child.....I wanted to be Heidi.. skiing and ice skating were my life.......I am so lucky I’ve ended up where I wanted to be I am up my mountain and my worlds very tranquil , traffic and crowds are such a novelty to me when I leave the mountain and goung to Geneva airport to pick up a chum is kind of an outing to me, seeing crowds and being in traffic!......the afib knocked the confidence out of me to walk uphill last year I never took the ski, lifts up once...puffed amd energy zapped....now after ablation I’m walking round the flat mountain lakes, tackling inclines.......but not quite there yet...sure half of it is caution ......my other passion is travellung.....I’m on a quest to circumnavigate Australia......well you can’t do all coast as there’s no round the coast road, but near as I can.....I’ve driven all western, southern, Melbourne to Sydney....now September doing cairns, well up to cooktown, and then down to Sydney,...two months ...4,000 km......I have taken health insurance out!!!! It will then in September be 8 months post ablation....I’m working on the surmise I’m fine , crossed fingers, and if I get a blip i tell myself I can now cope....you guys helped me get to that mindset with all your positive “ life goes on” encouraging......cos the initial shock of afib made me think my holiday travellung days were well and truly ended and confidence to even go to the village was zilch........I thank all of you who told me they did long haul flights...at the time I was thinking it was incredible of you to do that...and still impossible for me...and now I’ve got my tickets! Whoppieee!

Hiya Sue,

You've done more than I have. I regard Sydney as my home town, but lived in Melbourne for a couple of years and Canberra for a year.

Which route did you take between Sydney and Melbourne - inland via Canberra and Gundagi or the coast road via Eden and Lakes Entrance. The latter is my favourite. But I also love the coast road between Melbourne via Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles.

Which airline do you fly with to the Great South Land ....my favourite is Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong. Love Hong Kong and the Hong Kong people.

Don't even think about AF - just dwell on your time in Oz :-) go fer it !

Nice reading what you guys are passionate about. I'm sure you will see from my pic that I'm into photography....I was running as a small home studio business but my diagnosis first with the Afib and then in 1015 with breast cancer put paid to the biz. So now, I love to go off with the camera and just shoot....trees, birds, deer anything really (photographically speaking):-) . I have grandkids who I don't see very much now as they have moved but look forward to their visits to 'Granny Blue' and I have my great-grandaughter who is 3 and definitely keeps me on my toes!! I love typography and designing images with my own photography and am passionate about keeping memories for the future generations. People don't print photos these days, it's all on their mobiles and will be lost if the phone dies.....scrapbooking to the rescue for me! Lastly, I'm writing not one but 2 books. A book about my bc journey and a kids book based on my grandkids and my fairy photography!! So, I'm never actually sitting doing 'nothing'.

Stay well everyone,

Nice topic! For years I tried every kind of exercise trend - aerobics, step aerobics, Pilates, you name it I tried it. Hated every second of all those hundreds of classes, and then I found Zumba six years ago. I love it so much that I do 5 classes a week, and have recently started learning samba dancing which is brilliant. Another passion is having two lovely dogs to walk and play with.

Best of all is travel - we go away several times a year. We love to cruise, also journeys on the ‘special’ trains of the world. The cost of our travel insurance is eye - watering, and getting ever higher due to my ailments and advancing years, and also needing cover for worldwide, including the USA, just about doubles it. I don’t stress about that, I just tell myself it’s the air fare for my suitcase! I am trying to pack in as many beautiful memories so that if this AFib malarkey clips my wings eventually I have no regrets about not seeing any of ‘The Wonders’ as Karl Pilkington would say. Cheers, love reading your stories, all the best to you all - Diane.

History! I took up Family history 33 years ago when I was bored on Maternity leave. it’s so absorbing. Then I started on local history to give my ancestors context, then Mainstream history to put everything in context. It’s something you can do at home when you have periods of illness but there are lots of groups and meetings you can go to, then there are field days to look at the local landscape. I also joined the local U3A and am now on the committee. It was great to join up with people who are fully aware that health problems do not stop your brain working.

Love it! I had my own small business back in England befire we moved here...I was a professional genealogist....clients were mainly Australian and USA....I had a job that was my hobby so I loved it.....I miss it.....so important to put meat in the bones of those ancestors or they are just boring names and numbers!

🎶🎵Singing. I’m a mezzo soprano & I sang in a choir and at school I was one of 3 girls selected for special lessons, but becoming a nurse was my passion and left little time for singing - just in the car & the kitchen to annoy my family!

Scroll on forty years or so and in retirement I now sing in a large choir of 80+ people ( some of them are also 80+ 🤣).

Silly old fool, I’m going for lessons again, & currently learning Delibes Flower duet (lower) to sing with my friend at a little soirée in the Autumn. My teacher mostly has me singing Italian arias from 17th/18th century which I sing solo at our soirées to about 20 people twice a year - no boos yet!

I’m 65 now & the voice is still quite strong, but I will stop if the dreaded ‘geriatric warble’ strikes.

Also just discovered cruising - only been on one, but can’t wait for the next.

We were caravanners, but looking after Granchild and needing a new kitchen forced its sale. At least we won’t be sworn at by all the caravan hating car drivers anymore🤣.

Hi Jedi master

I used to be keenly interested in sailing boats, even building one in my drive. Sailing around the Greek islands left many memories. As I got older my children became my priority and holidays usually involved towing a caravan to somewhere on French coast around Royan or the Dordogne, or Northern Spain.

I have a passion for walking - no longer doing the 14 peaks in North Wales but wandering around using whatever cheats (ski lifts, etc) to get up into the mountains and then walk along the contours. All of the views and the pleasure and not too much of the hard work. The Emperor's path above Wengen in Switzerland with its views of the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau, and the Grand Balcon along the side of Mont Blanc are strong memories. as is the sight of the glaciers steadily retreating

My valve repairs and consequent ablation have made me realise that I either get out there and do it or I will lose the ability to do it altogether. In a few days I will be off to Austria to wander around the mountains near Kitzbuhel. The Ski-lifts all have cafes/bars at top stations, and I shall be keeping well hydrated as I wander along .

Ten years ago I could barely walk 5 steps, along a hospital corridor, on the flat. I am retired so I have time to exercise regularly and eat a very balanced diet. My wife's passion is ballroom dancing so I get to do quite a bit of that as well. Now I am looking forward to visiting the Italian alps next year, all being well. My mother used to say " Make God laugh - tell him your plans"

Morzine profile image

Yes great getting the ski lifts up in summer.....

Many passions, but very little time!

1- Old Aircooled VW's, I have owned and restored 30+ beetles, campers etc. However the 1965 beetle that is currently in the garage has been undergoing restoration for about 17 years!

2-Old Atari computers, when I get chance I like to restore/repair/upgrade them, current collection is about 12 machines

3-Music, I love music, the one thing I do get time for. Music is on most of the day. I have a nice hi-fi and a I'm one of the few people that never gave up on Vinyl, I have 5 turntables at the moment. My wife thinks that is too many

4- Live music. You can't beat seeing live music. I'm lucky that I have got to meet and befrend some of my favorite artists from the Britpop world and I can tell you that an AAA pass makes for a whole different experience at a gig/festival

5- Our caravan, well we bought a caravan 11 years ago and this weekend we will pick up it's replacement. we love being away in a field somewhere, so relaxing and great to have some family time whilst the kids still want to be with us. Wish we had time to use it more, but the times we do are very special

6-Surfing, I'm a bit too old and fat, but the kids love it now, so I live my dreams through them, I'm more likely to be seen bodyboarding, but I can spend hours in the sea. I am at my happiest here. Shame I live in the midlands and it's pretty much 3 hours to any bit of sea

We have a small campervan (Nissan Elgrand conversion) and enjoy a few days away whenever we feel the urge. It is converted to run on LPG so the 3.5litre engine isn't too expensive to run.

I used to LOVE hiking and climbing but arthritis .... well, you know the rest.

Our two Border Collies have gone over the rainbow bridge now so I don't get to enjoy a walk on the nearby beach.

I like photographing wildlife - no, not orgies - just animals etc.

My wife has dementia so I'm limited in what I can get up to now but I have researched our family history and enjoyed learning who I am.

I enjoy reading. (non-fiction.)

I also repair old pocket watches and buy and sell them. I've just finished one that was made in 1795.

I'm currently engrossed in learning all I can about the benefits of light therapy - particularly near infrared light. In addition to that I'm learning about water - yes - the stuff that covers two thirds of the earth we live on yet know so little about.

If anyone is interested try googling Prof Gerald Pollack and watch a few of his videos. I promise that you will be amazed!
