What can I eat after an Ablation

I am on day 4 of my Ablation, I do not want to do anything to upset my heart! Is coffee ok, or one glass of red wine, what foods should I avoid from your experience?

I would avoid all caffeine and alcohol for at least 3 months, or longer, after an ablation. I think anything else that does not upset your stomach would be fine. Obviously, if you know of anything that triggers your Afib, I would avoid that.

This is something I would have discussed with my Doctor before I left the hospital, or I would call and speak to his office nurse. I figured my poor heart had been totally stressed out and didn't need any extra irritation . In any event everyone has their own set of triggers with a few common to all. Behave yourself. Pam

I would think that such a course of action would be most unwise. Maybe in three to six months. Why risk all that hard work that has been done for a few minutes pleasure.

I still can't touch caffeine or stimulants in medicines, ie OTC allergy meds, years after.

Hi Slattery, having read some of your pre procedure posts, like most of us you were a tad apprehensive before the event and here we are 4 days post ablation and your posts clearly indicate that you are keen to get on with the rest of your life which is, of course, very good.

That said, you are right to be cautious. The problem is we are all different and consequently we all react differently to caffeine, alcohol and diet etc. I agree with Jjda, it would be sensible not to take any chances for as long as possible and avoid the obvious culprits. I’m not medically trained, but it would seem wise to avoid any and everything which may have caused you problems prior to the ablation and I would have thought it unlikely that having an ablation would now make you more sensitive to stuff that you were not sensitive to prior to the ablation. However, having invested so much in having an ablation why take the risk.......

Hi , had my Ablation a month ago , personally I’d avoid alcohol and look up what foods bring on AF and avoid , coffee generally wasnok for me , had one the next day no problem , everyone’s different , as you probably know it’s a little of a trial and error , it’ll either work or it won’t , beat to rest a few week , don’t exert yourself , and apart from that , you can eat lettuce , lots of lettuce

I continued to avoid what triggered my AF (white wine, being dehydrated, over busy stress ful day). Have had odd glass of prosecco now 3 months post ablation.

If you know your triggers avoid them for now and if it is something you want to try again you'll have to see how you feel.

I can’t say I ate any differently than I did before the ablation but maybe that’s where I went wrong! The occasional, good quality coffee and the very occasional half glass of wine, depending upon how I felt. We flew back to Spain very soon after my ablations so it’s a bit more difficult to avoid coffee and wine - but then it’s so much better than in the UK!

I guess it depends whether either of these triggered AF before. I still carried on drinking coffee but not strong as it makes no difference to me. I rarely drink as more than one glass of wine or G&T goes straight to my head. Not worth taking a risk with regular drinking for some months I would hsve thought.

Good luck with your progress!

Not long ago been advised by my Cardiologist not to have more than 3 cups of coffee or tea a day. Any more, have decaf.☕

The best advice is to avoid all cafeinated coffee and alcohol for at least 3 and preferably 6 months or longer after procedure. I went almost a year after first ablation, had couple of beers, and had recurrence of afib within 24hours. Medical literature is not definitive , but several sources say alcohol and caffeine can precipitate afib in susceptibile patients.
