Paroxysmal AFib

Hello, I have suffered with palpitations for years never had a diagnosis. Last few years I have been having in excess of 30 plus a day all ECG’s showed nothing. Two weeks ago I had an episode of AFib I was taken to hospital & returned to sinus rhythm in 4 hours & cake home. I am on Bisopralol although am still suffering 10 plus palpitations a day & my Apple Watch has been recording very high (200) & low (32) momentary heartbeats! I’ve just had a 48 hr holter monitor & I am seeing a Cardiologist next week. Echo according to stenographer looked normal but she said she still had to do some measurements. I also have high BP which is now under control. I am still off work as I feel so tired just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the tiredness & why I’m still having the palpitations & if anyone had experienced the high/low heart rates with their Apple Watch?

Sorry for the long post & thanks in advance 😊

Tiredness and AF go together and the bisoprolol is another zombie maker. Beta blockers such as bisoprolol will merely attempt to control your heart rate in AF . It does not stop the AF and for that you would need an anti-arrhythmia drug which GPs are not able to prescribe in the first instance. No doubt the cardiologoist will be able to tell you more but in the meantime go to AF Association website and read all the fact sheets as knowledge is power. Then you will be able to meet your cardiologist with at least some knowledge of what to expect.

Will do thanks 😊

30 ectopics a day is really not many, I had that many in the last hour.

what dose of bisoprolol are you on? It is well known that this can make you feel tired, even on it's lowest dose (0.65 mg a day) I still felt terrible

I’m on 2.5mg if Bisopralol, I was having around 60 plus ectopics before the meds might not be much for some but seems a lot to me 😊

in reply to Bebbe

Bisoprol could well be the reason for your fatigue.

Strangely I have far fewer ectopics now that I have stopped taking bisoprolol. And I also notice a further reduction if I forget to take my amlopodine

How strange!! I hate taking meds but obviously recognise the need for them. My ectopics shave lessened since starting the Bisopralol?

in reply to Bebbe

That's what's supposed to happen, however, I seem to be the exception to every rule 😁

I would be really happy with 30 ectopics a day rather than the 23,000 I can get on a bad day. Bispoprolol didn't work for me in the past, way to tired on it, and it won't help the ectopics.

It definitely helped my ectopics which were pretty awful lasting hours at a time on & off all day ( so they work for some ) 😀

Of course, everyone is different, my issue now is I get pauses and bp drop so Bisoprolol would make it worse. I wish there was a pill I could take which would solve the problem but unfortunately not ☹️

Well from these replies I see that my ectopics are minimal compared to some! The Bisopralol has lessened them though I am just trying to get a sense of what’s what regarding the AFib etc 😊

When you say palpitations, do your mean ectopics?

I mean ectopic, hard beats, slow beats a strange rhythm of beats & quivering if that makes sense this is all new to me so trying to make sense of it all 😊

Hi regarding the heart rate your apple watch is picking up I wouldn't worry too much as in AF it's difficult for it record accurately as the rate is all ivervtgevpkave. You'd be better counting your pulse for a minute yourself. Did you have episodes when wearing the Holder? If yes then cardiologist will see what's happening. Raised BP is a trigger for AF so discuss what you can do about that. I always think it's a good idea to have a few questions prepared for consultations and maybe someone with you as a second pair of ears.

Hope all goes well.

Yes I did have episodes wearing the holter the strange thing is sometimes the palpitations does not always mean a heart spike for me (I say heart spike as detected by my Apple Watch) so it’s idd or maybe this is how it is?

Do be sure to ask the cardiologist for answers. If you had palpitations whilst wearing the monitor and recorded the time on the diary the cardiologist can show you what your heart was doing at the time.

Good luck.

Hi Bebbe

Tiredness is a common thing with af, I have always been able to sleep on a clothesline but am even worse now that I am in persistent af. Don't forget your heart is not working correctly so you are bound to have some side effects. Rely on your cardiologist, they are the experts. Af is a scourge but we have to live with it as best we can. Don't let it rule your life. Enjoy yourself as much as possible. I wonder if anyone gets a slight discomfort in their chest, a bit like indigestion when in af, or am I being paranoid? Anyone shine a light on this?

Best regards Flyer.

Hi Flyer, yes I also have a lot of chest pain which was initially thought to be costochrondritis but not sure now if it is that? I do get indigestion but also tenderness on the right & left of the chest & that is different to indigestion. There was some discomfort during my recent AFib episode too. Thanks for your response 😊

Thanks for your reply. The discomfort I get occasionally is more like indigestion than pain. Do you think it is connected to my af, or just a coincidence?

Regards Flyer.

I get indigestion with my AF which is persistent, I have had it for over 26 years. I take Bisoprolol 7.5mgs it does make me tired but I try to ignore it and get on with my life normally, I did get a blood clot when my AF was untreated, but have been fine since the heart attack. The worse meds for me are the furosemide, diuretic meds I hate them
