I only ever drink zero % and the best I've found is Heineken 👍 to be honest AF is that much of a mongrel condition what one person drinks won't necessarily be a trigger to you and vice versa so the only way you are going to find out if it gives you any side affects is by trying it... Personally I wouldn't even sniff the stuff as it triggers me hence tea total for 25 years 😬 My advice would be to stay with zero % as 0.5 isn't exactly going to be much of a thrill anyway.... Take care.

Thanks djb. Many of the alcohol free beers are in fact 0.5% but I will try them and hopefully nothing will happen re Afib

It is worth mentioning that it may not be the alcohol but an enzyme formed in the making of the beer which casues the reaction. Low alcohol beer ( I think maybe only Carlsberg sell zero but may be Heineken) is made just the same as ordinary beer and then the alcohol is removed with an osmotic process. I tried Kaliber back in the day and had terrible hangovers with it!

This process is the same for supposed alcohol free wines and it is likely the sulphides used to clarifty the wine doing the damage I understand.

That's really interesting Bob. All of my AF has come from having booze, sometimes only three or four beers (bottles not pints). Perhaps the chemicals in it are the real trigger so I can trial and error is the way forward for me. Did a post a couple of weeks ago about whether I should go on anticoagulants as my Chads2 score is 1 (age only). Dr today mentioned that it would be Edoxaban if I was to go on them. Any idea what this one is like as my cardio suggested apixaban

Cheaper mainly.

Also, if the beer is cold, that could trigger AF rather than the alcohol.

Yes, I think some food/drink ingredients could be a contributory factor for those close to the AF threshold already. I am teetotal and bought some artisan fruit squashes at a Christmas fair over the weekend only to find they had sulphites in them. These days it is quite an achievement to find 'clean food/drink'.

Just had lunch with a friend who revealed he has been experiencing AFib for the past few months (it started the day he retired) All very new to him and adjusting still. Has given up alcohol etc and tried alcohol free beer but it set of an episode. Whereas for me i can drink alcohol free (and probably the full fat version) with no adverse effects. As has so often been written on this forum we are all very ‘individual’ in the way the condition affects us and also what affects us.

I drink zero alcohol Heineken and Carlsberg with no ill effects. It means I can socialise and have fun.

Im not convinced one bottle of low/non alcoholic beer will trigger PAF. At least some of the problems with drinking beer possibly arise from fluid overload and regularly drinking large volumes is likely to exacerbate PAF

Not heard the view on fluid overload before - dehydration brought on by alcohol is also a factor.

Had a pint of 4.1% ale last night followed up with a few Heineken zeros. Didn’t have any issues so for me just having the one alcoholic drink and then alcohol free might be the way forward. However I’m not counting my chickens yet

Yes non or low alcohol is a trigger for me- and that’s definite-as Bob says must be something in the process

Yes i drink the blue one and I've had no episodes afterwards.

Hi Profound15

As others have said one mans meat is another mans poison, so who knows whether it will affect you. I drink larger shandy and also none alcoholic Koperburg which I quite like with no effects. I do occasionally on hot days have a can of larger, again with no effects. So my advise is, if you can tolerate it drink it, all things in moderation. You don't know until you have tried. If it affects you, Don't do it. Good luck for the future.

Regards Flyer.

Ask for 0-0 which is totally free of alcohol. Several good ones on the market.

Just noticed in the supermarket today that they sell Gallo Rose which is 5.5% ABV. Seems like producers think there’s a big market out there as the alcohol free/low alcohol choice seems to be expanding. Also noticed Guinness which is 2.5%

The gas in a lot of drinks including non alcoholic beer can cause bloating and digestive stress which in turn plays havoc with the vagal nerve...…….. end result and attack of AF

I have tried low alcohol beers and truthfully have struggled to find anything that tastes anything other than fake beer BUT I have discovered Sole Star, a new amber beer from Adnams. Their .5% Ghost Ship is very good and quite drinkable but the Sole Star is technically not no alcohol (.5% or less) but low alcohol as it’s .9%. This beer is so good I am electing to drink it without any bother at all. At a dinner party at mine on Saturday night two “doubters” tried it and both became converts. On the lager side the Swedish brewery that makes Pistonhead do a very good .5% lager.

I love Adnams so will keep my eyes peeled for the Sole Star. Purely for research, thanks for the tip.
