Apixaban/dental

Hi , I am just after a bit of advice please. I had a molar extracted at the hospital early afternoon. They told me not to take apixaban this morning. All went well I think, dentist really quick, she took it out packed it and stitched it and all finished in 15 mins. However I forgot to ask if I should take my evening one. Now in a bit of a quandary do I or don’t I. I know it was very remiss not to ask but had a long discussion afterwards about my jaw healing as I have been on osteoporosis drug that does something horrible to your jaw. That’s how I forgot!!!

We are not medically trained Barneysmum, but it is normal to proceed with the evening dose. I certainly did after a wisdom tooth was removed and all was well. If you check out the NICE recommendations for extractions, they say that it’s not necessary to stop taking your anticoagulant for up to 4 extractions (may even be 6!) but dentists are not always well informed with DOAC’s, but you will be fine.....just keep stroking your dog.....🐶

As Flapjack says, we are not medically trained and we can only offer our personal opinions, for what they're worth.

If I were in your position I would take my evening dose, but I wouldn't fret over it. I suspect that some people worry too much that missing a dose will cause a stroke. Even if missing one dose were to leave you without the extra anticoagulant protection, the risk of developing a blood clot was relatively small in the first place - you don't go from zero risk to almost 100% certainty if you miss a dose. Also, the formation of a blood clot does not necessarily lead to a stroke.

Take care and keep stroking your dog :)

Thanks Ian really appreciate comments, did actually take it and nothing drastic happened.

Feeling much better this morning too. Barney will certainly enjoy all the extra strokes.
