Vonnie - there is a lot of evidence that food and nutrition is involved in mood disorders but it is much, much more complicated than just one food type which is a reductionist model which doesn’t help.
Anything raw = good and we grow our own cucumbers so lots of Greek Salads - delicious. 80% of your plate should be vegetables and include every colour.
I am currently doing a challenge to eat 50 different foods in one week. If you want inspiration - go to m.facebook.com/thedoctorski... Doctor on FB - fab ideas and he often does hang outs on air & works on The Doctor in the House series & written several books.
Emerging evidence is that the gut biome is the key - healthy gut - healthy mind and body. Any gut flora imbalance will result in disease, affect the body, the brain and mood.
To encourage a healthy gut flora - cut out all starches - cakes, biscuits, bread, desserts, fried foods. Avoid any processed fats and stick to coconut oil for cooking and cold pressed olive oil - but read the labels very carefully as many say they are olive oil but are not cold pressed or are blends of vegetable oils!
Eat raw whenever possible - salads of every colour of vegetable. You can eat reduced starch foods such as potatoes, rice & pasta - you do this by cooking - cooling rapidly and either eating cold or then reheating. This supports and encourages good gut flora.
The MOST important thing about food & digestion and disease is being able to go into rest and digest mode before and after eating - something I figured out for myself last year. You must sit and relax to digest so don’t leap up as soon as you finished eating, learn to relax and take your time. Especially important for us AF’ers.
It means radically changing our eating habits and that can be difficult but just change one thing at a time. Good place to start - no more fried foods or cakes!
So can you bake or grill the food instead
Why cook at all in this weather - raw is always best.(not meat or chicken or fish obviously). I tend to steam, rarely grill and occasionally bake but mainly steam as you don’t need to add oils etc. In winter I tend to use a slow cooker a lot and do lots of bean and vegetable stews.
Last night we had steamed sock-eye fillet of salmon topped with home made pesto, starch reduced new potatoes with Ali-Kohl, beetroot & apple grated salad and young courgettes which I did griddle and drizzled garlic butter over.
Do have a look at the Food Doctor - some great ideas and short cuts.
Healthy eating is about radically changing our eating habits and ways. It is like learning everything all over again! But the health benefits are worth it.
I find this thread quite depressing as I'm fine with cutting out cake and fried foods but my husband isn't! Also although my head loves a raw food diet my gut doesn't, goes into spasm at the sight of a cucumber 😖
