I had a took extraction whilst on apixaban no problem.
Hi Howbeck. I had bleeding problems with a surgical extraction about a month ago. The problem was my Dentist decided i did not need to stop Apixaban 24 hours before the extraction, as recommended, despite my queries. The extraction was in the morning and it went well. I returned twice to the Surgery in the afternoon with bleeding issues and on the second visit was given stitches. During the following days I had two visits to A & E. I had already decided to stop Apixaban before the first one and when in the Hospital my bleeding had stopped. I was told to miss the next dose (three in total) and I was fine for a couple of days. In my next visit to Hospital my wound was dabbed with Tranexamic Acid and the bleeding stopped. I left Hospital with Tranexamic Tablets for a week. Normally the dosage is 2 to 3 tablets but I had to take one, and continue taking Apixaban. This drug is used to stop bleeding and it has worked for me.
Other than loss of sleep and the nusiance factor I did not 'suffer' as such from my experience. My advice (and the NHS) is to stop Apixaban 24 hours before the extraction, and remember the name Tranexamic Acid. TerryW
