A recent very helpful tip (thanks Bob) I had here was to try nasal strips to help breathing at night.
I have constant mild congestion of the nose, just means I have to blow my nose a bit more; it is also apparent if I start running and can't go more than 50 metres comfortably before I have to breathe through my mouth.
I never thought of it as a problem. I never suspected that caused poor nights sleep, suspected sleep apnea (tested & OK) and a possible contribution to AF. Now to be sure of a good night, I always use Nasal strips and to give the nose a break from the adhesive the Mute nasal insert. Yes - if you can re-train yourself to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth and from the diaphragm and not the top of your chest, it has great benefits. I didn't realise I was not breathing properly and when you don't, too much oxygen and not enough carbon dioxide is stored in your body and causes dizziness and breathlessness and inability to walk any distance.....
It took a lung and physiotherapist specialists to identify the problem in myself, as posture also plays a part, and after several months in re-training how I breath and addressing shoulder and neck issues, I feel so much better now :)) Not all GP's/Doctors are looking for this issue as a major cause, as we are all focusing on our hearts as being the only problem area. It was explained to me that over time, as we feel unwell, our un wellness can cause knock-on affects.
I found this out by trial and error. I felt so unwell with headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, neck pain, snoring and inability to walk which was deteriorating over a prolonged period, that I started to go to a physiotherapist and they pointed me in the right direction. Hope this is of help.
Very useful to know, thanks Mickey. I have learnt so much incl knock on effects since getting AF, I am almost grateful and certainly feel I have been lucky all these issues have been drawn to my attention.
