Extractions while on warfarin.

Hi guys, 3 days ago I had to have 8 teeth taken out at my dentist. I am currently on warfarin and have been for 15 years I'm currently 32 years old.

Had the procedure done on a Wednesday hardly any blood by the Friday. Started bleeding really bad at 4am on the Saturday morning. Went to the hospital lost quite a big clot then bleeding stopped, came home as doctor at hospital didn't really seem interested as the bleeding stopped after loosing the clot, mouth is now bleeding quite bad again.

Has anybody has this problem? If so what did u do about it and how did u get it to stop??

Thanks guys any help/advice would be much appreciated

Piece of medical gauze folded up on the wound and bite hard onto it for at least ten to fifteen minutes.

agree with Bob- also did they check your INR at the hospital? Make sure you are in range

Agree with Bob too, that's exactly what my dentist told me to do when I had a tooth out.

Bobd Is so right I had abcess and had it out after AB treatment and folded guaze worked well Dentist gave me extras just incase it started again and it did, 15 mins was fine afterwards. the clot is doing what it is meant to it's only when it is removed it bleeds again.

Agree with all previous advice.....I had a tooth removed recently and had no problems (on apixaban) but after 5 days, developed an enormous black 'n blue bruise under my chin and throat. Was a bit worried about a possible bleed as I was going to France the following day so went to A & E. All was OK, but it has taken over a week to subside.....just thought it would help you and others to be aware......hope your problem is now sorted.....

I had my first tooth out under the old system, where they took me into hospital, stopped the Warfarin, and put me on the Heparin Bridge. Heparin was stopped for the op, then restarted. That night I could not get the clot that forms naturally in the socket to stabilise and stay put, despite support by manual pressure. I swallowed a lot of blood. Next morning the surgeon saw me, early, and said there was a small vein giving problems, and he needed to cauterise me. So, back down to theatre and that did the trick.

Nowadays they have special gauzes they can use, which dissolve later.

Post-hospital, I found that oral-strength hydrogen peroxide was great. This seemed to reduce the bleeding. It also had the benefit of attacking any food caught in the wound and loosening it.

Second tooth out, same surgeon, a few years later, INR 3.3 I think, required gum surgery, but done in outpatients. No bleeding. The gauzes stopped that, but had the side effect of reducing the clot formation needed to fill in the hole. Healing was slower, and my jawbone was agony for a few weeks due to lack of protection. At least I could sleep. Pain killers did not work. At least I knew it would stop, eventually.
