It would be interesting to know where? Do you have insurance? I was quoted £12,000 by my consultant's secretary. He uses a Spire hospital.

in reply to Coco51

I was quoted £15k in 2009

Matsuyama Red Cross Hospital Cardiology Center under Dr Kubo (EP) in South Western Japan.

1 year ago (10 months to be precise)

But surely this is not the full price. You will have the theatre , anaesthetist, nurses, hospital stay etc to factor in as well.

Yep, the full price, including drugs and accommodation. I was in for a week, 2 days before and 5 after. I live in Japan and am in their state health care insurance program.

Yes I saw this some months ago, so when I was told I would be put on the NHS waiting list and it would be 10months before the procedure (and that at a hospital 40miles away!) I asked bout the cost of private treatment via the local consultant. To which £11k? Following a private consultation I am now booked into a large hospital in Birmingham for treatment in July and expecting a cost of £3-4K

I would be interested to hear what your final bill will be. Is this for AF or SVT

I don't think this is the full costs they have looked at - it's probably just the EP himself. There's the equipment, 5 monitoring nurses, the pain control nurse and the cardio surgeon on call fee to add.

I was verbally quoted about £10k, but that 12 years by one of the EP's at the BMI/QE Birmingham. But he said that if something went wrong and they had to call in a surgeon, it could be £50k, so advised me not to do it unless insured. Now as I say, that was a long time ago and maybe they have fixed prices and guarantees/own insurance now, I wouldn't know. But worth checking out unless someone has the answer before you get a nasty surprise!

That looks way too cheap. Personally ,having had a complication duri.g mine, I would sooner be in an N.H.S. hospital where the surgical back up is on hand!

If this is the real price though perhaps it is because the technology is cheaper than it was at the outset. X

I am insured through work with AXA. For some reason they sent me a copy of all the bills they paid so I know my ablation in March worked out at just over £8000 - that's everything - bed for the night, lab staff, drugs etc etc. The procedure itself was just under £6000 I think. This was done at the Alexandra BMI near Manchester. I could dig out the paperwork if anybody wants to know the gory details!

I think you will find that if you get a procedure /operation funded through an insurance the cost to the company is less than if you were to fund this yourself

Not true - market conditions prevail. If the hospital can squeeze in an extra one then they will do so having recovered their running costs etc on insurance work!!!

Insurance companies always send you the bill and ask you to check it. Usually there are undercharges!!!

Very helpful. Have been looking into treatment in France, where ablation was pioneered. Am on the 'get better or die' waiting list for the NHS.

Interested to know the cost in France....

in reply to Japaholic

I have seen them averaging around €5000. That price, though higher than many private hospitals in the UK, will reflect the extra days in hospital. Having had both hips replaced in France, they won't let you leave until you are known to be MRSA free, any incisions are healed and you are fit to travel. I have been very pleased with the care quality in France. If the EU referendum results in the UK remaining in the EU, then 80% of costs can be recovered under Artcle 56 of the Cross-Border Health Care Act. I've done it twice.

I understood the UK cost to be between £10,000 and £15,000 for NHS ablation.

I looked up the cost of my ablation with Prof Schilling through BUPA. His fee was £1918 but it was a complicated ablation. The theatre fees were £22,906 which included EP lab, accommodation, ECG, radiology, pathology, drugs, etc.

If you're going private I would suggest you choose your EP and facilities very carefully and don't just go for what appears to be the cheapest. You may well need a second if the EP is not up to scratch. Also be prepared to travel.

I did consider an ablation in France. If I was going there privately I would go to Bordeaux.

That was 6 years ago. So far no recurrence but I'm touching a lot of wood....
