When I got AF it didn't increase my heart , it was just erratic. My heart could go faster at times but this would usually be because of a stimulant such as alcohol, caffeine, stress or pleasure.

Interesting my hr has always increased

in reply toMazza23

My heart rate can increase due to a stimulant and then get AF, but I don't need an increased heart rate to get AF. So they can, in my case, go together but not always or even usually.

Hi. My resting heart rate is around the mid 60 and  when I used to get AF it would rarely climb above the mid 70s maybe 80 at the maximum. If I was taking a beta blocker then the resting rate was around 55 and the "AF rate" rarely above 70. Of course this would vary based on what sort of activity I was doing, and any sort of exertion would send the rate up quite a bit. AF comes in a variety of options!

Umm I take 10mg bisoprolol but hr always went above 100when resting that is until recently we are a strange lot

To be honest, I would expect 10mg of Bisoprolol to lower the AF rate somewhat, but what I have learnt over 25 years plus of AF is that it has the capacity to manifest itself in many different ways, or more likely as the body changes (ie gets old) we react to it in different ways.

I should have said that I had an ablation 10 months ago, and no AF since ( but other health problems still keep me company!!) so I do believe there are things we can do to fight back. The trick is to try and stay positive which isn't always easy but best for the soul.

Hi,A couple of months ago I had AF ,my HR was around 90, this lasted about 2 weeks,at the time I was suffering from a bad cough and cold,my doctor wasn't concerned,I have previously had AF with HR of 160 +

My resting HR is about 55 in NSR- am on metoprolol. My last ECG whilst in AF showed 100 but it could well have been higher depending on when in the episode it was taken. My episodes invariably start when I'm either sitting down or in bed- never so far when active. First ablation last year - second in May.

We are all so different - I keep a log of episodes yet have stil to find any common triggers.

Mine used to be the same  but now start anywhere anytime

After reading those posts, I believe the doctors even more. My ideal HR is about 80, highest went to 216 and lowest at 31. Guess I will have to start listening more intently.

Can anyone please tell me what it feels like to be in AF. My HR has slightly gone up from 45/50 to 75 .I sometimes can feel my heart beating but that's all. I never had an AF episode. How would I know. I am on Apixaban and perindopril only. I hope this isn't a too stupid question. My HR is very irregular. 3 fast 3 slow, setting out and fast again, so on and on sometimes a different rythem.

EMS, it doesn't necessarily feel the same for everyone.  I've learned to feel my pulse and identify my normal pulse (60 resting heart rate for me), and now if I get somewhat short of breath, I check my pulse and can feel the irregularity and the faster beat.  I guess if I had to identify any one indication of being in afib, for me it would be shortness of breath.

I feel it instantly as my heart rate increases and it feels like a bag of worms in my chest

Yes Mazza, at first in AF my heart rate was 90 then as time went on and I became (a bit) calmer about it my resting heart rate was 60, though still irregular. But the heart rate increased very rapidly with the slightest exercise, and I was easily made breathless. It felt like a writhing sensation, as you say - a bag of worms in the chest - or as someone else said - a box of frogs jumping about.

I just  had a pacemaker download and results showed in last 3 months I had 2 attacks of af lasting about 5 and 15 hours with heart rate of 170 of which correlated with me feeling unwell however I had other episodes lasting minutes to one lastin 4 hours of which I was complexly unaware of as my heart rate was much lower 60 to 80. All in all I was in af 4% of time over 4 months .so yes you can be in af without the fast heart rate and some of can be unaware but only aware of the af with the fast heart rate
